RAF Training

Hi,

I have recently applied for the RAF as a Weapon Systems Operator Crewman, and i am attending a formal presentation next week.

Although i have not been selected yet, i have a few questions about training.

I understand that i will be spending 9 weeks at RAF Halton, and a further 10 weeks at Cranwell.

I was just wondering what exactly happens during this period, besides drill and rifle training? What does a typical day involve?

Any info you could give me would be great, cheers.

Get some beans in! Halton was once a 'proper' training unit in its 1 S of TT guise!.

First 9 weeks at Halton will seem like a nice holiday when you get to Cranwell and the 10 week delights of A squadron. After you complete this phase, you will go to B squadron of 55. This part of training is the generic phase of aircrew training, after which you are streamed. Main point here is, you cannot apply for crewman as that decision is not yours, you may end up as a WSOp EW or ACO in the rear of a nimrod.(Of course your preferences are taken into account). PMA and your friendly instructors will have the final say in your future role though. Good luck with the application.

I followed that link and...

Good Lord! They actually have lines painted on Henderson-Groves now!!! It'll be spring mattresses and duvets next one supposes.

Actually they looked rather smart.

... for a bunch of rooks.

Firstly, good luck with your application. As mentioned previously, the choice of specialisation is no longer yours, so you may end up firmly rooted in the North of Scotland spewing about the world's oceans or feeling very important in the back of a Waddo mushroom. You need to think carefully whether or not you are prepared to accept the alternatives to "crewman". There will be a lot of hard work and effort required between applying and being selected for a particular role, some 24 weeks into profesional training (?), so you need to be sure that if you are offered something other than crewman you would be happy, otherwise a lot of your time, sweat and effort will have been in vain...Enjoy!
