Here's the translation of it.....the local weather was low vis, freezing fog..we sent a cab out..they found the scene.

Bundeswehr Troops killed in a Tornado Crash

The Fighter-Jet crashed into a wood in Oberbayern. The Pilot and Weapon Systems Officer were killed. The cause of the crash remains unknown.

Kaufering (nr Lechfeld..also very near where they found Adrian Warburton’s wreck… from the translator) The two man crew of a military Tornado Fighter-Jet were killed in the crash near Kaufering in Oberbayern. The Pilot and Weapon Systems Officer were found dead in a wood not far from the scene of the crash in the early evening.

A Defence Ministry spokesman reported that the aircraft is thought to have crashed at 15:20, shortly after Take-off, into the wood some 3 ˝ Km south of the airbase. A large area around the crash scene was sealed off. Firemen had to battle a small fire in the wood. Police Units were also involved in the Rescue and Recovery mission.

According to Police reports the ill-fated aircraft was based at Lechfeld. A Fighter-Bomber Squadron of ECR Tornadoes is based there. These aircraft are specially equipped to attack enemy Radar and Defence systems. The Sqn was involved in the NATO missions during the Balkans Conflict in the 90’s.

Tornadoes have already been often involved in accidents. Recently, in the Spring of 2004, two jets of this type were involved in a mid-air collision in Schleswig-Holstein (North Germany). Two of the four crew died.

Sympathy to the families of those involved.

I hate it when I have to read this kind of news. So true that it is a dark week in aviation.

Heartfelt sympathies to all concerned with this tragic incident.
