Don't you realise that 87.4% of all statistics are made up?

Depends HOW your read the figures In isolation the Gazelle especially looks good, but when you look deeper you see the real figures.

Just rough calculations for the 2000-2003 period and operational ac are...

ac / num of ac / tot 1000's hrs / 1000's hrs per ac

Tornado (GR) / 84 / 101 / 1.202
Tornado (F3) / 70 / 83.1 / 1.187
Jaguar / 37 / 46.7 / 1.262
Harrier (RAF) / 42 / 47.2 / 1.124

Nimrod / 23 / 48.7 / 2.117
E3 / 6 / 19.1 / 3.183

C130 / 45 / 148.5 / 3.300
VC10 / 18 / 48.4 / 2.689
TriStar / 8 / 40.6 / 5.075

Chinook / 31 / 42.0 / 1.355
Puma / 37 / 54.7 / 1.478
Sea King (RAF) / 16 / 40.4 / 2.525
Gazelle / 117 / 140.5 / 1.201

(Concerntrated on RAF types, but included the Gazelle due to inditrees post)

The last column is the one to note, the number of hours (x 1000) per airframe. That shows who the real workhorses are, although again it doesn't tell the whole story as it doesn't state the number of 'crews' per airframe.

The top 6 ac types, for hours per airframe, are...

TriStar-----5.075
C130-------3.300
E3---------3.183
VC10------2.689
Sea King---2.525
Nimrod-----2.117

So, where does the Gazelle come now? Well actually it comes 3rd bottom, above only the F3's and Harriers

But remember, statistics can be used to tell any story you like

Ok , you got me there MAD_MARK, but some times it just seems as though we are the only ones flying.

What worries me though is, that by placing these accurate details in the public domain we will bolster the argument of annother round of 'Get more for less' cuts thrust upon us by those gurus in their £1000 chairs.

Q - How many Air Officers have flying accidents?

A - Virtually none. (Sorry, Sir John. But it had once been 'One of Theirs'!)

So, promote every pilot to Air Rank and the accident rate will plummet, eh?

Statistics. 73.21% bolleaux!

Stats are fun...

True statistic:

Over 60% of Belgians have more than the average number of legs.

Perhaps it would be revealing to know the (a) numbers of the following types of unit when this Government took office, (b) the number of the same after the latest cuts are implemented and (c) whether there has been a change in the number of tasks and deployment for each type....

Infantry Battalions
MBT units
Heavy Armour
Army Aviation
Air defence aircraft
Ground attack aircraft
Tankers
Transport aircraft
Support Helicopters
Maritime Patrol Aircraft
Frigates/Destroyers
Submarines
Mine counter measures vessels
Carrierborne fighters

Etc...........etc............etc
