WWW - totally agree that if you want something do the donkey work and present it as a done deal to PMA -stops them having to think and displays the time honoured JO attributes of initiative, deviousness and cunning!!
However, my problem lay in the fact that every solution I put up was stonewalled and I got the distinct impression of an agenda that I wasn't privy to even though it involved me! All this fueled by lots of rumours from elsewhere but nothing from PMA to quash or substantiate them.
So the issues was really more a case of how do you deal with PMA when they are being devious and cunning than how do I get a good job with out doing a bit of digging. The latter bit I can do -the former part, well lets say IOT and professional trg leaves you rather unprepared for PMA's brand of games, so advice from those that have jumped through the hoops and survived requested!

I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
In my case I wanted out of ISK. When I rang my poster the first thing we had to sort out was my replacement. I suggested 3 names. Two were rejected the third, now coming up for his 3rd tour, was accepted.
He knew what we had done and was 100% pissed off. However he got lucky. The Falklands War blew up and he was in the right place at the right time. Not long after he had passed through sqn ldr to wg cdr.
Try and pick an up popular career path, each step more important or more senior. Everyone else will step out of your way.
Sgt Pilot to V-bombers. Lots of slots and they had to commission him.
Chief Ground Instructor - a slit wrists job. They promoted him.
Unpopluar wg cdr's job. They promoted him. Then he got a sqn.

No longer an engineer...
RLE
Following the introduction of the common GD Branch, I am now an ex-engineer, and in competition with my former Flying branch colleagues for posting. Therefore, if there are any 'easy ground tours' out there, I'd be interested to know about them!! - but I don't expect there are any and, if there were, I don't imagine the master races would let on to their blunty siblings...

If Cranwell told you about it, they'd be putting you in a position of influence over PMA - couldn't have junior officers too well informed about what postings might be available, could we??!

Old and bold? Well I’m old.
In 1957 four of us passed Hunter OCU but thanks to Duncan Sandys (the Hoon of the day) we were sent to a ground tour. Two of us (on behalf of the four) went to Bentley Priory and when the day fighter poster was out of his office filled in the appropriate forms and posted ourselves to what we wanted.
It worked for a while then one morning after met the wingco flying read out our four names and said “Station Commander’s Office and don’t take your hats off”.
Fortunately the man in the office was enough of a leader of men to appreciate we were reasonably motivated and had us posted to four different Hunter squadrons.

I am quite convinced that personnel are sorted into 2 piles at PMA. The first pile is the 'post him he/she will not mind pile' and the second is 'consult this person first' pile. Unfortunately, I am one in the first pile and have been moved all over the place. However, that said, I have had some really good times over the years. My advice is consult often, be polite and do not get too upset when you do not get the posting you want.

Hmmmmm - Chinook, that's the best suggestion I've heard for a long time, don't tempt me.
SS - Have tried every thrick I can think of, including being polite, not badgering, suggesting and doing PMA's jpb for them. I think I'm in a third pile, namely those files lost behind the radiator with the bit of mouldy cheese sandwich stuck to the dust jacket!! Wouldn't mind any posting right now as I approach the 3 yr point for my first tour

When I was keen to leave ISK, I embarked on a regime of asking my Flt Cdr 'has my posting come in yet?' he would ask 'what posting?' and I would reply 'Oh, I'm posted to Wyton Sir!'
Eventually, after several months of this, he phoned up Barnwood as it was then, and said 'when is this posting to Wyton coming thru' for Bloggs?'
Couple of weeks later, posting notice duly arrives!
Keep badgering them, after all, they have very little else to do..........do they?????
Kind regards
