Question PVR/QR question

If someone (light blue if it matters) had completed 16 years and had a formal job offer, where would they stand with getting out before their next option date whilst still hanging onto some of the pension? I understand there is a QR that covers this, does anyone have the ref? Any advice happily taken!

Vega15m,

depends on your circumnstances:

1. How old are you?

2. When is your next option?

The rule does sort of exist, not sure its in QRs, and is dependent on PMA and your current Boss.

I left last year and employed this and a few other little tactics.

Rather than going through with the PVR, and depending on what branch/trade you are, you could always wait a couple of weeks for the offer of an outstanding posting and/or promotion from PMA. (Only wonder if you would get the appropriate scores on your OJAR next year in the 'Loyalty' and 'Sense of Duty' boxes though.)

Vega,

Not quite sure what Two Tunnels meant, I must be a bit slow as his comment was a bit subtle for me.

Anyway, I've dug out the paperwork from when I went through something similar. Basically, if you've served 16 years (i.e. reached your Initial Pension Point) but have not reached your Initial Retirment Pont then you can leave provided you have a job offer. For example someone who at age 37 has served 16 years reckonable.

The downside is that you will take a disporoportionate hit on your pension and gratuity. I believe you get about 80% but I may be wrong.

The rider in all of this of course is that needs of the Service can prevent.

However, without going into specifics, I found everyone including Stn Cdr and OC Admin very helpful. For what its worth I kept PMA as out of the picture as possible as they were the one outfit dead set on screwing me around (no surprises there then).

Oakworth,

Thanks for that, now have that info from another source as well. As you say the pension hit is large for the sake of a years service but a job's a job! Don't want to be the one who turns the lights out when airline recruiting really kicks in.

I understand that you may have to repay any FRI received should you go after 16 years and before pension point - might be worth checking if it applies.

I have been in a similar situation post 16/38 point but after I had accepted service to 55 and phrased the application to leave a little differently. Essentially I told PMA I wanted to leave BUT did not accept the reduction of pension.... much correspondence later they promoted me and gave me a jolly good posting however, they were willing to let me go quietly with all my money at 3 months notice.

Advice is play all the cards carefully, build up the guns you have to employ, make the veiled threat that your MP (mine is a nice forceful chap!) and or the papers (last resort - not to be used lightly) will become involved. I had to go as far as my MP but that did the trick and I got what I really wanted. Find what will put the squeeze on your bit of PMA and apply the pressure but don't make threats you don't intend to or can't keep.

Good luck!
