PANORAMIC NVG's
I was lucky enough to try on a pair of PNVG in the US recently and they seemed awesome, and a huge advance on the latest generation on the front line. Its claimed that the field of view is about 100 degrees horizontally and 40 degrees vertically. They were about the same weight as the gen 2 gogs and fairly compact.
Has anyone flown with them in the UK and are they as good as they seem?
I think they are probably too expensive for our millitary, but surely if it stopped one aircraft accident then they have payed for themselves!

Having done some looking into this myself recently (don't ask why - I'm just a nerd), I was surprised how relatively cheap these things are these days. A set of AN/AVS-9, which are the standard gogs the USMC fly with can be picked up for under $7000 here: http://www.x20.org/nightvision/anvis...ht_goggles.htm
I also found, while looking into this, the following article: http://www.hec.afrl.af.mil/publicati...Gsidpap397.pdf , which outlines a panoramic system with 100 x 40 degrees FOV, achieved by adding another tube either side of the traditional binocular mount. Presumably then the whole set up wouldn't cost more than say $20 000, which really isn't breaking the bank in the grand scheme of things is it?
Now the question is, would you rather have Gen III panoramic gogs or some binocular Gen IVs? Is there any point even asking for panoramic Gen IVs?
