Military escort over London

Just been told that a commercial jet was being escorted by two military jets over central London. Anyone know anymore?

Was just going to post a question as my sister called and described something "fast" going over her office in London. She has been around my father and me enough to know what is not normal in aviation. What's up with this?

Unconfirmed information from a work colleague who grew up next to an air base that, from its sound, it was an F16.

Wink

Whatever it was it sounded a lot lower than usual - my office is near/under the flightpath into LCY and so regular a/c noise is a commonplace. Whatever went over made several of my colleagues who are usually totally uninterested in aviation (unless they are off on vacation) comment ... It sounded either like a military jet throttled back OR a small jet zipping faster than usual into LCY (do jets land there these days?) or even a v speedy jet helicopter (no rotor sound!)...

Will be very interested to know what it was!

edited to add: I only heard one engine sound from where I was sitting and was, alas, no where near a window!

Not sure anyone apart from the Red Arrows, let alone a foreigner, would be allowed to fly a single-engined fast jet over London.

The point seems to me that there were three aircraft?

One large(ish) jet & two smaller escorts. Has clearly gone from one side of London to the other as they were spotted over Stanmore.

Ohhhh.......conspiracy. Love it.

One or two things doesn't add up though. Mentions of fast moving jets doing just that AND escorting a commercial jet. Now I'm a little slow on the uptake and all, but this doesn't quite add up.

I saw them go over near waterloo. 2 fighters and a 4 engine place by the looks of it - possibly harriers and a kc135 tanker perhaps ?

Apparently, there is an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum about the lads involved in the 'Great Escape' - some of last remaining escapees were there, according to the BBC - could it have been a flypast for them ?

Appently there was a service at Westminster Abbey today commemorating RAF Coastal Command and its successors, according to the Abbey Website.

Could have sworn it was four podded engines on the large aircraft - need to get my eyes tested !

Saw it today and could have sworn it was Harriers not Tornados.

Is there an 'e' in Tornado(e)s?

And this used to be a forum for professional pilots.

Now the spotters can't even tell the difference between an F-16, a Jaguar, a Harrier or a Tornado. Not only that but a Nimrod has become a commercial airliner!

How sad.

Thanks, JW411, for your helpful and constructive comments.

I heard it, but I couldn't see it because of all the buildings until it was flying away from me, so all I saw was the formation flying roaring into the distance. If the formation was at 1500ft, it doesn't take much to hide it from view amongst the streets and bridges around Waterloo. The two small jets certainly looked like harriers from the rear.

I'm sure in the current climate, all of the posters were curious (or indeed concerned) as to what they saw and hoped someone would point them in the right direction as to what was actually flying overhead.

Your comments don't help in that regard one iota, and just make you out to be a smug prat.

JW411,

You are right. This used to be a site for professional pilots now they will even let the likes of you come on. No personality profiling and no attitude checks. Just straight on.

What next??

Cheers
