Lightbulb New Novel

Anybody out there read the book "Married to Albert"?

If so, what do you think?

Wink

I'm the one!

I have to (irrelevant) admit that I have read ( brackets ) it. It's a marvellous novel ( aren't we great ) with a depth of wit and ( no autobiographical content, honest ) humanity that Tolstoy himself would be ( instant- expert ) proud to call his own. Still, it's a little difficult to read with all that ( I've not got an editor ) parenthesis going on.

That minor criticism aside, it's a joy.

Unfortunately, Bunty's guide to writing for the under fives was out of stock at Dillons, so I'm stuck for being able to write my own stitch up of my friends and neighbours. Oh well. Luckily, I didn't pay for it.

If you haven't already, save yourself the money and throw scrabble letters at some pritt-sticked toilet roll. The outcome won't be of less literary value.

Guy, some former members of Her Majesty's RAF are in the sex offenders book, but I wouldn't boast about that either. Let alone wear the name badge...

RK,

So don’t wander around bragging about being a sex-offender ??

I’m stuck for something to retort with. Perhaps square brackets would do it….

If you’d read it you’d know it doesn’t stitch up friends and neighbours. I don’t have any friends and the neighbours quite rightly ignore me. Now stop plugging your newsagent business even though you have over-ordered the non-sticky sticky stuff and velvet quilted and get over the conviction.

You won't find ME promoting stuff in these forums.

Oh no.

'Married to Albert' is a great book.

Snoop

I've not read the book but I know a "friend" who has! I suspect this thread will either fill up with comments as more ppruners read it or die a death for the same reason!

Watch out on eBay when Guy tries to sell off remaining stock in the garage. Or watch his garage to see the new sports car arrive.

I was hoping that if we created enough argument about how good or bad it was we might get a cut of the increased profits!

Just read the review on Amazon - seems quite amusing! No doubt there'll be some jealous gits or those who claim it's inaccurate, but what the hell - it's just a novel!

I was hoping that this wouldn't turn into a publicity campaign involving the authors next of kin, but I guess if you want that sports car badly enough....

I was trying to get peoples opinions on whether they think it is morally right to air peoples private lives that have been viewed from a distance.

I know many who are quite annoyed with the content, but I suppose if your on the way to the top of the Waterstones bestseller list it doesn't matter who gets trodden on!!

Didn't intend to do advertising here, so previous post has been deleted.

Without moving onto tabloids etc, the only person whose life has been publicly aired is the lead character’s - and even that's fictitious! As for the 'many' who are 'quite annoyed' with the content, you must move in more sensitive circles than I do

You're hardly likely to get peoples honest opinion on the book face to face now are you. You've been in the mob long enough to know that.

That said, good luck to you

Oops. Didn't mean any bitchiness. Sorry if thats how it came across. I was merely floating a topic to discuss.

So, in order to maintain the peace I'll close the thread - when I've figured out how you do that of course

he tells me there are two types of Officer, those that pee in the sink and those that don’t
Not strictly true.

The second type is the one who lies about it.

Question

Just followed BEagle's link to Amazon. There's too much to read but I was puzzled by the "Used" copies being more expensive than the "New" ones ? You're not trying to make even more dosh under a pseudonym are you Guy?

I was more puzzled by the spelling and the grammar.

Sounds like a good book, is it worth buying?? Anyone else got a good book they'd recommend? Personal favourites of mine are Chickenhawk and Chinook!

I'd recommend 2:

Enemy Coast Ahead - Guy Gibson - The last chapter is most apt in these times when Gibson berates the public/govt of 1930s for wanting a higher standard of living, lower taxes and not spending enough on defence. He warns us of this folly - it was what made want me join up.

Catch 22 - Joseph Heller - Humorously and sadly highlights the way we can all lose sight of sense and reason under the stress of military service - especially those in charge. Seeing some of the modern-day Senior Bods behaving like Major Major and Colonel Cathcart is what made me want to leave!

Thumbs down

"Peoples" has an apostrophe, as in "people's. Lara and Guy please take note.

Real officers pee down the side of the sink so as not to wake her up.

The morality of airing people's private lives in print depends on whether those people can be easily identified. The human condition is such that we are all guilty of bad behaviour occasionally and it is only natural to feel some guilt when this is presented to us by a third party; whether or not we are the intended target. If it is obvious then either consent has been obtained or a lawyer could be sought. But if it is you then are you really prepared to stand up in court and identify yourself as an abject onanist in public?
