Ooohhh, hark at you, Ed.

Someone nicked your handbag?

Apart from not spotting I haven't directly used the word 'peoples', for an Editor I thought you'd have known that if you open quotation marks it's traditional to close them again. Nice use of onanist though!

'Married to Albert' is a great book.

Can't believe that Geoffrey Wellum's 'First Light' hasn't had a mention yet.

Gripping stuff, which describes many of those flying (and, particularly, flying training) experiences we've all had so accurately.

Ending isn't awesome, but heh it's a true story, neither was the ending to Anne Frank's effort!

How right you are, it's also correctly spelt and punctuated; sorry to go on about those two little things but we are talking about books and they are quite important in that context.

If we're talking about books concerning flying then what about Head in the Clouds or Airymouse or even Flying Colours ?

Thanks Guy, you're right. The second quotation mark fell off but I found it on my desk, so here it is".

Advertising on these pages really is bad form.

Married to Albert is a great read...

And what about A Severed Head by Iris Murdoch? It has adultery, suicide and incest, but no mention of any kind of genitalia... What's that all about, then?

Definately time to close the thread. It's more boring than I thought it would be. If you want to advertise some more Trev, you'll have to start your own.

Married to Albert

I'm in the middle of it and thoroughly enjoying it. Although I cannot recognise the RAF it presumably depicts, you can put that down to my age. There is some quite good writing in it, very much in the Jilly Cooper genre - ie, raunchy and racy.

My main impression so far is how much has gone out of the fun and challenge of service life. Life is made too easy in some ways. Secreting girls into one's room in the Mess and spiriting them out again sharpened the libido - forbidden fruit and all that. A room next to the back staircases (batmen for the use of) in the 1936-pattern messes (eg Rissy, Thorney and Cerney)was a prized asset. The stakes were high. Detection by the OO or SDO could result in a court martial and dismissal.

In addition to officers who peed in the sink and those who didn't, there was a third category - their lady guests who had to, or risk getting caught in the corridor. Happy days! (and nights).

If you want really inspiring reads then try any of the following:

Leonard Cheshire's Biography - Forget Gibson, this shows what real commitment and leadership is.

"Stalingrad" and "Berlin-The Downfall", both by Anthony Beevor - Will make you realise how litle this country really suffered in WW2

Happy reading

English Passenger

Aren't you coming on a trifle heavy mentioning Beevor's superb military history books (I have them both) in the same context as "Married to Albert"? I thought we were talking about light reading. And I don't think it is necessary to knock Gibson to beatify Saint Leonard. They both had their individual styles, and some may be uncomfortable with saints.

I've just finished the book and have not laughed so much in ages, there are passeges that I recall happening whilst I was in Lizzies employ. Good to be a little nostalgic sometimes...

Will there be a sequal? Think there would be enough interest. And there must be many many more funny stories to put into pen...

Book score, 12 out of 10!

Would someone care to post details of the book, author, ISBN details, etc.; it sounds interesting and I'd like to try to find it here in the Antipodes!

Kind regards,

TheNightOwl.

Bu99er!

Misread the thread and thought the novel was about Lara Croft's Pants-shame I'm sure that'd sell

I bought it anyway though-just to be sure,... looks interesting and the reviews rang true, we'll see...

I've just finished reading it and thought it was very good. All Linton studes will be able to relate to the stories of him going through BFT. Found myself at numerous points saying "I've done that"

Sorry about the delay in replying, trying to drag a reluctant aircraft around N America. Another night in Gander looms, although the broken Monarch aircraft outside does promise hostess presence ...

Mrs W is very happy that people are enjoying Married to Albert and yes, book 2 is already about 50% complete. All she wants now though is for the media launch of book 1 to finally happen and we can see how many non-RAF sales it'll make! Then it'll be either driving the sports car to the helipad or using the profits to get fish and chips for tea.
