Look at the pictures first, then read the story.

"So much for the thought of a boring refueling mission! This is a pretty amazing story.

Lieutenant Keith Gallagher's Account:

Murphy's Law says, "Whatever can go wrong, will, and when you least expect it." (And, of course, we all know that Murphy was an aviator.) Murphy was correct beyond his wildest dreams in my case. Fortunately for me, however, he failed to follow through. On my 26th birthday I was blindsided by a piece of bad luck the size of Texas that should have killed me. Luckily, it was ........."

Losing one's helmet at only 230 kts does not say much for either design or fitting but I guess the seat installation was even worse!
Top latch??

Lucky guy! I remeber something about this story. I don't think it was the top latch, I think it was one of the cartridges firing. Only one, hence the limited movement. I more than one had gone, he would have cleared the cockpit and may have been killed by impacting the tail as the rockets would't have fired.

Speaking of A6s, anyone else seen the film 'Flight of the Intruder'? Great flying scenes and an awesome night out in Subic bay!

Cracked top latch. Main gun did not fire. As seat rode up rail the drogue gun fired after 8" and drew out drogues and parachute. These wrapped themseves around the tail. Seat stuck on rails as air pressure bent parts. Rocket did not fire as seat travelled less that 72" needed to fire rockets.
Barostatic release operated and harness released so he was lucky that he did not fall off seat.
Lucky man. There is a video of a/c landing on somewhere. The pilot r/t is a little scary when you hear it!! (understandably)
