Navy SAR?

Hello, is anyone in here in the know w.r.t. the new direct route to navy SAR from shawbs? Is this just a time filler before the wait for Merlin shortens or is it permanent?

Navy SAR courses

Presently no decision has been taken over pilot courses on 771 NAS. However i think they may well start again this autumn. This is a result of shortages in the Seaking pilot world. This is a direct result of the delay to Merlin training. By now we expected to be able to re-train merlin pilots for a SAR respite tour however they haven't done enough Merlin time. I expect a decision about Seaking ACP will be reached in the next month or so.

Grrr RN SAR

Me thinks that the "shortage" has now established itself back at Shawbs! LOL But.............

..........The RN cannot be that short of Sea King pilots as there were no Sea King only qualified FTC(A) selections this year - or are they?

There are a couple of slots for ab initio Sea King guys starting this Autumn. They will not lead directly to SAR jobs though, but as HDS/Utility role and MIL SAR for the jets on the carriers. (Very different to Civ SAR AT 771). After 18 months to 2 years in that role it could then lead to a SAR job at Prestwick or Culdrose but there are no guarantees of course. Could be a good move but then again it's hard to say as it's not been done before. The HDS flights will be pretty good I imagine but you will of course be missing out on that big Squadron pi**ing up......

As for shortages, I saw the stump-meister recently and can confirm that he still looks like an Ewok.

How much longer has the Sea King got left in the SAR role? Will we see yellow or red/grey Merlins?
