Coltishall - 15/16 May 04 ??

I heard from a source that Coltishall are having some kind of Jaguar celebration event over 15/16 May 2004, does anyone know if this true & would it be strictly station personnel only, or would it be open to the public (limited numbers) at all??

Any info gratefully recieved

Would that be a Station Closure and Jag Disbandment celebration?

See the Sunday times.....

Maybe this is the belated birthday celebration of the squadron with the longest unbroken service - 90 years of shiny six.

Ive seen it as the 14-15 May - 90th anniversary 6 Squadron with a 10 ship ?? ! flyby.

Unsure of public admittance though knowing the RAF probably not! Great history marked by yet another pathetic paint job!

Broken Silence, and King Abdullah of Jordan flew in for a flypast last Friday.

p.s.
I've got a copy of a Rondot print signed by all the pilots who flew in Desert Storm, it was one of the main prizes in the Coltishall mess Xmas draw that year. Anyone know if it was a one-off or, if not, how there are out there?

This link indicates that it is indeed part of shiny six's 90th birthday celebrations:

While there will be acknowledgment of the anniversary on January 31, and a parade soon after, he explained the major commemorations would take place over the weekend of May 15 and 16 with an airshow at RAF Coltishall.

6 Sqn Celebrations

Reading this thread, I was reminded of the incident of the 60th Aniversary of 6, back in 1974, when they flew the mighty F-4 and were based at Coningsby. I was on the OCU at the time and the story, apocryphally, went something along the lines of.....

Boss of 6Sqn, at shareholders meeting, "OK lads, we're 60 years young in a few months, how do we celebrate?"

Much muttering between drivers and navs, head-scratching and humming and hawing, suddenly one chap says, "Seeing as we have two standards, let's invite King Hussein of Jordan, should be good for a few beers!" "Great idea" says Boss and pens letter which says,

".. Dear King, we're having a party, love to see you here in Conningsby,

love

Boss

PS Bring a bottle!"

Said letter wings its way off to the ME.

A week or so later, Foreign Office Jobsworths get to hear about it from a blunty or some such and descend upon Boss of 6 with steam issuing from all orifices, ranting about protocol, dignity, not the done thing, can't be allowed etc, etc, culminating in, "He'll never come, over, but if you had filled in proper FO forms in triplicate and included your mothers' maiden name, inside leg measurement and NI number, we might have given it some thought here in Carlton House, blah, blah. That'll teach you little Wing Commander to follow procedures, you'll get a right b0ll0cking for this and so on and so forth.

Boss of 6 reaches into his desk drawer and produces an elegantly crafted letter from KHoJ saying,

"Dear 6 Boss,

Great idea, love to come, can I fly one of your new single-seaters when I'm there,

Love,

KHoJ

PS. The bottles are on me."

FO jobsworths go apoplectic, Officers Mess gets new lick of paint, new carpets, complete overhaul of WRAF wing and general wash & brush-up. Mega P1ss-up ensues when KHoJ arrives, whole station gets day off after PU and all parties pleased as punch, esp 6 Sqn Boss who has offer to go and stay in Jordan with his family for summer hols.

As an addendum, Boss of 6 did go to Jordan, at exactly the week before the Greeks and Turks decided to play chase the F100s over Cyprus. Guess which Sqn is tasked to go and defend SBA Akrotiri? 6 with Boss practically on station. In the end he flies back past Cyprus, touches down, turns round and flies back out again. Ho Hum!

Yes there is an event at Colt this weekend and it is to celebrate 90 years of unbroken service for 6 Squadron. Happy Birthday to us! Had a look in the records but couldn't see if BEagle flew the Bleriot on the squadron in the 20s....

It's open to all former 6 Squadron members (and Stn personnel) but unfortunately, not to the public. There is an air display on the Saturday including a 12 ship airfield attack, and various local social events throughout the weekend.

I hope that they've remembered to tell all us poor put upons down at London Mil so that we can roster another couple of extra bods for the weekend for the extra moves. Oops, that'll be a no then.

Was at Colt when we did the 60th Anniversay of BoB and the Station though. Fantastic weekend with a HUUUUUUUUUGE amount of bevy's drunk. Must get up there when they do the close. That I would imagine would rank up there with Bruggen.
