Best Thing?
Probably not what you're after, but most fun thing was when holding at Leuchars many years ago.
Airshow was to include simulated airfield attack by Jags/Tonkas or some such. To add realism, it was planned to set of a series of explosions coincident with the ac passsing over, as if bombs had been dropped. Timing key to whole thing, but also the nature of the explosions. What was needed was a bl@@dy good bang, and plenty of flame and smoke, but with minimal actual damage, FOD etc.
My job?
"Tomorrow morning you will be picked up at the OM at 0830; you will need to be in greens. You will be taken down to the beach where a series of explosions will be set off. We want you to pick the one that meets the requirements best."
I even got to press the buttons and all that. Can't remember what mix of AVGas/Diesel/etc gave the best results, but it was brilliant fun anyway.

Worst Moment.......
Must have been tearing my 'Banjo string' during, well you know what. Went to med centre only to have a surgeon come in and anesthetize the Gland by means of injection (Needle straight into purple bit!!) Then I watched as he proceeded to cut away the remaining tear and then put two stitches in it. All whilst conscious!!! Nice... No.

if you want it!!! she was a trainee lawyer in a door-way with my friend (now dead fom GW1) watching,as we sorted a few CRM aspects with this girl!

Manning a picket line with a pick axe handle instead of something with bullets (real live enemy carried proper weapons) because some F**** Stupid idiot (it was a secondary duty for him) had lost the paperwork and weapons could not be drawn without appropriate signature on appropriate bit of paper. Was I glad to see daybreak with a better chance of spotting anything ammiss (so I could run like hell before anyone asks). Long time ago in a litte place way down south just east of Africa.

Probably starting work as a rigger at 07:30 on a Thursday in ASF doing a Major on an Egg Whisk and Finishing the shift at 09:30 on Friday morning in a Squadron Hangar having just prepped a Cab for a Royal Flight! Was I tired? you bet, but then again we'd only had to change a load of components that had used over half their lives as it was going to fly royalty! One engine, a gearbox, and a few driveshafts and rotor blades later......! Them were the days, a 26 hr non stop shift so that Charlie could pop off to Brize and welcome home the Gurkas from the Falklands.
Now in todays caring sharing Airforce would this happen? No! I had a feeling of worth and belonging in them days, but Flight Safety!?

HOODED: I must have served with you...
Undoubtedly the most dedicated tech's I've ever come across, I learnt a bundle and was alternately amazed, amused and humbled. And, boy, the flying was cool.
I went to 107 countries on TQF. My best memories, for sure....

Whilst under the affluence of incahol i decided to borrow a Gazelle which was parked in the MT compound of an American base at Baumholder in Germany. A flick of a switch and the thing lit up like the Las Vegas illuminations. That was enough for me.
On the same AMF exercise a Puma attempted a night lift of a 105mm light gun, about 3000 kgs. Had the chains been rigged properly the exercise would have proved uneventful, however they weren't and the gun pivoted with the barrel heading rapidly for the floor of the Puma. The gun was dropped from about 30 Ft. Were you the crew that night??
Mean while the survey section FOU and OP were led across Germany by c/s seagull. He decided that we should all use convoy lights (remember them) a thin pencil beam of light with the intensity of half a candle pointing down on the ground by the rear axle of the land rover.
Seagull was lost and at about 0100 the convoy ground to a halt. I have now idea how long it took him to work out where he was as we all fell asleep only to be woken by the rising of the sun at about 0500. A quick look out of the window revealed he was gone, christ knows where, and six land rovers all cued up behind me. Seagull hadn't a clue where he was, other than Germany, because he didn't come back to get us and never said a word at end ex.

Whilst on det in chania(?), crete after a few loud mouthed soups, a few of the chaps (me included!) decided to nick a peddalo(?) to 'sail' from one bay to the next. naked. what fun as we pushed off into the surf to be persued by an extremley annoyed local screaming about his 'kids and home etc etc'. That and the sea state persuaded us to abondon ship and swim ashore. Happy days, indeed.
Also, same det, riding a stolen push bike down a steep hill. Into the harbour. Surrounded by locals and tourists alike. Well lashed up. It was proper bo, I tell thee!

LBH RAFG mid 80's before the days corn circles other items seemed to pop up over the airfierld in the snow season...
Built a snowman one night around a concrete post near the RHAG, with a mate... then watched with binos as the usual RAF Plod L/R drove into it!! Must have made an interesting Report...
We were travelling in a westerley direction when we spotted this stout man in arctic cammo on the airfield...... We challenged him but he didnt move... So when taking a closer look, he ran out infront of us and we swerved and hit a concrete pillar!!
30 to 0 in .0000015 sec!! Thought the laughter would have woken up the Fire section where we were hiding!!

During the Foot and Mouth mularkey I was instructed to dig up some 250 cows that had been buried for about 6 weeks for proper disposal elsewhere. During the burial MAFF had broken the water main to an unnamed northern town...... twas a bit soupy to say the least.
As an added bonus had to sort 4 of said cows from the herd to be sent to an incinerator since they were over 4 years old and may have been BSE infected. How to identify the 4 cows.......ear tags.
I can confirm that the 4 correct ear tags and ears went for incineration and that 4 cows with a corresponding lack of left ears went too - whether the ears and cows matched is anybody's guess!
Imagine eating thick vegetable soup with a fork and you get the picture. We were in fishing waders slinging the lumpy bits out at the end.
