Unhappy CONCORDE: Is it me...?

Is it really true the only reason that beautiful aeroplane will fly no more is because Airbus Industrie at Toulouse have declared 'Non' to supporting its ongoing operation?

It would have been nice for some examples- both French and British- to have been able to continue in flying condition. It would have been wonderful for examples to have been retained as a French Presidential 'Air Force 1', or for the UK Queen's Flight/ Prime Minister's transport. In the former case, of course, the French would have had to admit the AF crash was probably their fault not Concorde's, so it'd be very unlikely.
On the other hand I'm being a dreamer- it's an impractical vehicle for anything other than over-sea routes.

Does anyone know if one will fly to Cosford Aerospace Museum and become an exhibit?

Probably been said in other forums/threads but it stinks to high heaven that for the first time in human history we are taking a step back in evolution (if you discount the formation of the RAF Regt).

I remember witnessing 01 doing a flypast at Yeovs airshow many years ago (I was of course, small boy, jumpers for goal posts).

The Concorde was the safest ever production aircraft. But as usual, the Frogs decided to do the French thing and cock it all up.

I feel ashamed and embarrassed to admit defeat in sacking the Concord (sic).

Why couldn’t we allow Branson to buy them?

On principle, I couldn't however let Bliar use one as his own personal hack. I'd rather staple me bits to a cross channel ferry.

I cannot believe that in the year that celebrates the centenary of powered flight we decide to stop operating the only supersonic airliner on the planet.

Give them to Branson and let him get on with it!

Here, here!

Due to the heavy use of these forums we would prefer it if you are going to post something then please make sure it is worthwhile and at least 15 characters long. One liner replies such as 'Yes', 'No' or 'I agree' for example, are not necessary and only use up valuable bandwidth. Please use your back button to change your reply or use the link below to go to the forums.

That should do it. Frecking thought police!!!

A rumour has reached me from a high placed source that Les Grenouilles are keeping a Concorde at Le Bourget which could be returned to flight status in 48 hours if Grenouille-en-chef so decrees.

But Skippy has just got rid of ba's as quickly as he could so that no-one else could ever operate them or even ba should the decision by that pathetic bunch of lords and suits who infest ba ever be reversed.

Shall never, ever fly ba! At least, not whilst the Dirty Tricksters are still being paid hundreds of thousands per annum.

"Yes, in answer to your first q. Vive la France."

fireflybob then commented
"Give them to Branson and let him get on with it!"

So how would the wooly jumper manage to maintain them then?

He'd have had to use someone else, to whom Design Authority could have been transferred. In the wake of this cosy stitch up between two French, publicly owned and politically controlled institutions (AF and that division of Airbus) it went largely unremarked that Airbus employed only 17 people full time on Concorde.

A number of organisations made feasability studies looking at taking over DA and support for Concorde, most prominent of them being QinetiQ.

BA, however, have absolutely no interest in allowing anyone to take over Concorde, since whoever operates it, as long as it exists, the bloated long haul division's 747s will NEVER be able to charge true premium fares, and the company's profits will be restricted as a result.

Though Concorde was still making a net contribution to BA's books, one Concorde was never going to make the profit that one 747 (with no Concorde as a hoover for the top-rate Premium fare passengers) could, and BA had only five Concordes, but b*gger knows how many 747s.

Unfortunately, BA can do what it likes because legally it owns these aircraft, regardless of the fact that it has never paid a proper price for them. Way back then, when the Government pulled out and transferred responsibility (and all the profits or losses) to BA someone should have had the foresight to lease the aircraft to BA at a Peppercorn rent, rather than selling them for £1 a piece.

For anyone to operate an ex-BA Concorde, BA have to give their blessing, and that is NEVER going to happen.

Chocks;

What's your problem with East Fortune? It's part of the National Museums of Scotland and has a superb collection of historic aircraft, including the Black Buck Vulcan that diverted into Rio, a Comet, A Lightning, etc., etc., and it does sterling restoration work, including the Spitfire recently presented to Glasgow's Transport Museum.

http://www.nms.ac.uk/flight/index.htm

If the measure of a museum's suitability to house great aircraft is the type of aircraft that fly from there, what does that say about Hendon?

No problem at all Wub - my family comes from just up the road, been going there since I was a lad, my Dad even taught me to drive there. It's a fantastic place, and now getting the support that it deserves.

My comment (though I see how it could be misconstrued) was referring to the logistics of getting the greatest passenger aeroplane that ever flew to the site - I'll be first in the queue to see it

OK Chocks, with you now

Treadders:
The Vulcan flew in to East Fortune but it was a bit of a squeeze, I doubt Concorde could manage it.
