Wings converts to PPL?

My son has recently gained his RAF Wings having completed EFT with his UAS. I believe they're called 'Budgie Wings' at this stage.
Does anyone out there know what's involved in converting this qualification to a PPL. Not a lot, I would think, since he now has about 70 hours in his record.

A few of my colleagues did just this a couple of years ago (after the JAR licence came into play). You need to do a solo landaway (with two stops normally, except N Ireland), and you have to do skills test (both handling & nav tests). Plus you need to get up to speed on civvie regs and their ways of doing things. I think the people I know did it in 5-10 hours including the tests. You also have to do the written exams. Anyone with better knowledge please feel free to correct me.

Congratulations on your son's acheivement. However, his EFT graduation is not 'Wings'; those come after AFT. To obtain his PPL, he'll need to pass the theory exams and to fly the 'qualifying cross-country' in order to gain the relevant course completion certificate from HQ EFT which will credit all his EFT flying for PPL issue. The EFT staff should be well aware of these requirements.

However, if he's no longer on the UAS, his flying experience will still count. He'll have to pass all the theory exams, fly the qualifying cross-country and also confirm that all the relevant JAR-FCL flight requirements have been met before flying the PPL Skill Test on a civil SEP aeroplane.

Beags,

What are the requirements for PPL if you are "Winged". Heard something about 6 months productive service entitling you to a PPL after the envitable paperwork/money ?

FFP - quite correct. Unless you have the relevant EFT course completion certificate AND are still current on SEP aeroplanes, the QSP accreditation towards the JAR-FCL PPL only applies to those who have reached CR status (in the RAF) or who have achieved the quivalent in the RN/RM/Army. Until CR is attained, only the flying hours count and more exams/flying and the full PPL Skill Test would be needed.

And I guess that certain flying clubs in Oxfordshire not too far away from secret airbases would be able to guide such a person through the procedure ?!?!?

If your son is joining the RAF he can use his UAS flying to get a PPL course completion certificate which is recognised by the CAA. This is done via JEFTS groundschool at Cranwell. This effectivley covers all the ground exams from the PPL bar two. He will complete this after IOT if he is going to be a pilot. All they need from him are the dates of his Final Handling Test (FHT), Pilot Nav test (PNT) and the date of his cross country nav if he did it. If he didnt complete this on the UAS then he will get a partial completion certificate. Providing he has all the requisite flying from the UAS all he needs to do is a ground exam in Air Law and Radiotelephony (R/T) and send a cheque to the CAA for £143 for their efforts.

If your son is not joining the RAF then he will have to present himself to a civvy flying club with his log book and see who offers him the least painful and cheapest way to get his PPL and he will have to do all the ground exams.

Hope this helps, however, his CFI on the UAS will be much better placed to give him up to date info.

And also Beags, we get our wings (real ones) after Basic these days!!!!!!!

Wings after BFT - back to the way things were in the early 70s...??

Well - perhaps for BJFT or BFJT or whatever it's called. Do the 'ME' peeps get their wings after just Tupperware Trainer time on Das Teutor, or have they to wait until they've finished on the Fruitfly and/or Wetdream?

I hope that most people exercise their accreditiation to PPL rights using EFT time. If they don't, they'll have to wait until they're Combat Ready before they're entitled to general QSP accreditation rights - or 2000 hours military time before certain CPL accreditation.

You'll also find that your local RAF FCA Flying Club will be a much cheaper place to gain any PPL qualifying requirements than a 'civvy flying club'...

FJ heroes now get wings on completion of BFJT at Linton. I heard a rumour that organising a wings graduation after completing 208 Sqn at Valley was too time-consuming for the hard-pressed QFIs and students, when their minds should be on the Tac Weapons phase. Another rumour suggested that it was easier to tie people into the RAF to amortise their service if they subsequently got chopped on 208 or 19 Sqn.

RW mates get wings on completion of Sixty Sqn (AFT) at Shawbury. We spend longer than the other 2 streams earning our wings, from 0 RW hours to starting the OCU/OCF!

ME mates get them on completion of the Jetstream. As the servicability is so pants, a lot of them go to Kidlington to fly the Seneca(?) Another little bird tells me that they do NO low-level at Kidlington, so graduates from there cannot go straight to the kipper fleet.

..and hopefully not 18 year old airline cast-offs turned into tankers, but nice new current generation A330s! Or even A400Ms....or C17s?

But will there be a Nimrod MRA4? Or will someone decide to throw it way and pop the mission system into an aircraft with wings that actually fit? A321 perhaps - but with rather more power generation, a centre fuel tank and a stores bay?
