Sometimes they do run out of people on Standby. They mitigate this by calling people on their days off to cover flights.
For a time around ten years ago the occassional flight didn't go due to crew shortage bringing on an early announcement of the next years salary adjustment. |
On a similar theme, the only action I have ever seen elsewhere be effectively 'bullet proof' was a pre arranged sick day. You only have to exceed the number of stbys (particularly Capts) available and the wheels begin to wobble gaining the otherwise apathetic attention of your owners. However my guess here is that even if every pilot pushed the button the company, in its arrogance, would fire the lot rather than admit it had made an error. Leaving only one option which is to leave, ranting on here will not change anything and the conditions will continue to deteriorate year on year as we have seen.
Button 1 . Stay and suffer in silence. Button 2 . Unilateral Sick day and risk termination. Button 3 . Leave |

I would say that the reason people do train is to make up for the shortfall in salary over the years and the every increasing cost to live in the ME. At least the locals get the UAE local living allowance (gone up?) to keep up with the inflation as they are the ones who live here, we are just visitors albeit long term.

So lets sum up some of the wonderful changes that have been dumped on us within the last 12 months.
0% pay rise, the 3% is contractual if they know what that means, hence another pay cut. Inflation rising at greater than 3%. The threat of being evicted at a moments notice to prison Meydan. The farce of the special tickets, sold at higher prices and almost totally unavailable. Crew catering, now getting 1 meal on a 10Hr duty day ( fancy breakfast at 2pm not), many ASR's appearing about this. Certain long haul flights now cut to 3 crew instead of 4. It's just been a year of take take take, one wonders if EK has past its peak, and has now started the downwards slide like so many other major carriers of yore, one only has to look across the water to Bahrain and Gulf Air. If things are like this for us what has been offered to others like Cabin Crew, Ground Staff etc. How many CC who took unpaid leave will actually come back, and when the runway works are completed what sort of mess is going to be left when things ramp up again. On the upside I've been given a cheap looking flight bag, so mustn't grumble too much, as it justifies TCAS position within the company. This thread needs to be kept alive and kicking, as it's only when they get kicked in the wallet with lack of crew all round will their arrogance come back and bite them in the :mad: |

This salary adjustment was feeble to say the least! Flying the TARGET 92 hours, a Captain now earns a whopping AED644 more per month and a FO a mind blowing extra AED 460 per month. Of course when you are leave - it's COST NEUTRAL to the company! If you have 3 kids in high school, you "stand to benefit" an extra AED1,750 per month (not really schools fees are an excuse to print money in the UAE) - if you don't have kids, sorry - you gain ZERO. So, everyone in same boat here. If you live out and own your own villa you "gain" an extra AED1,125 per month (not really had a look at property prices, bank interest rates and DEWA lately), if you live in company accommodation you gain ZERO and if you RENT anything larger than a shoebox in Karama, then you're (most likely) still OUT OF POCKET. So, everyone in same boat here too. Bottom line, expect nothing, give nothing. Thanks for the new flight bag. |

Interesting reading over the last few days - mostly warranted. Frankly I was surprised along with everyone else with what was delivered. I guess it is what it is...it's a commercial transaction. They give what they think will retain. We leave when we will no longer accept what we are given. Attrition is our friend...and it will continue. Attraction is not an issue - plenty of tools in HRs box ( DEC, lowering hours, lowering aircraft weight threshold, 2nd Officers etc). Personally I have gone from being an Emirates Pilot to being a Boeing Pilot over the years. I don't care about what is written on the side of the fuselage anymore (I used to)...I fly your peeps from A to B...give me my money. Nothing less and never again anything more. I have no anger or enmity towards the corporate entity...because it's business....you extract the maximum from us while giving us the minimum...BUT you now have a problem because we extract the maximum from you but give you the minimum (& often times less with those with no scruples)..the abstract cost of that culture is reflected in this report from 'BusinessTraveller' on a. Trip report from biz class in the A380: "The service on this flight was impersonal and at times slapdash. It's the first time I have ever seen a passenger chatting on his mobile phone during take-off, the cabin wasn't tidied properly before landing, and passengers should be helped to make the most of the flat-bed with the bedding available. I also find it odd that with the extensive amenity kits on offer, you have to ask for ear plugs separately." Not exactly SIA ... BUT the people I do look at with disdain are the resume builders who subscribe to this mirage...the 'fresh prince of gel hair' ACP, The HR volunteers, the mgt wannabes.... (Not the trainers...I believe that is a vocation) And here's why...most of them came from a unionized system of proper negotiations and principles...that was the original facilitator of getting them to a position of where they would not have been today...cue TCAS, ATC, EGT ... And the new teenager from Scandi...(does he shave...???) To them I say...you are viewed with contempt with 'a smile and a handshake' ...and you represent nothing of what the profession deserves .. ..Respect. f. |
Why does a A380 CA make the same as a A330 CA? Let us start there.

I think all A380 pilots should be paid at least 5 steps more than anyone else.

Good point pilotrob - I agree that 330 pilots should be payed significantly more due to all the night turns, flights into war zones, old battered aircraft and crappy promotion prospects. :}
