Where are all the jobs then? Who are the carriers that are hiring? You seem to know something that the rest of us don’t.

I can’t quite get my head around it all. We have people on here telling us Emirates and the Middle East is a fantastic place to live and work, based on nothing, only that they haven’t been affected by the global pandemic.

That it was our fault for not having our eyes open wide enough before going to the Middle East.
Nobody could have predicted a global pandemic.
Of course Emirates suites you. You still have a job, until you don’t.

nimrodjoe 2nd May 2021 04:34

What we seem to be forgetting here is how people have been treated.
No amount of stories about lizards and spiders can prepare you for that.
An email in the afternoon telling you that it’s over.
Then no further contact from the company you have devoted your life to. And told not to expect and update from flight ops.
However, it’s clearly important to send us videos of pilots throwing their hats to music. Do you remember that?

We know what the Middle East is and we know what to expect.
But we couldn’t have seen a global pandemic coming. Could we?

Remember, everything from trying to cancel your phone line to closing your bank account to trying to contact end of service is a nightmare.

Its a horrible journey and the people that have been through should not be forgotten.

And telling us to read a story about frogs and camel spiders is quite frankly outrageous and demeaning.

Fired600 2nd May 2021 04:47

NimrodJoe seems to pretty much echo the exact thing that also happened to me, so for those thinking it’s a story , then yes it is .... a complete nightmare!

As for all the jobs? What jobs? I’m not in the US where there does seem to be a few at the moment and people are leaving the sandpit for. The rest of the world is a desert, the few jobs that have appeared and I applied to haven’t even written back to me, and I have a lot of experience over many years.

Emirates always had special ways but its treatment and complete disregard for its loyal staff was shocking. It works until it doesn’t, some people still still there thinking they are special and super talented so they were kept on are in for a shock one day.

Nimrod, you should have listened to your grandfather! (I don’t expect you to work that one out 😄

Anyway, I think you did not know what the ME was and what to expect, because if you did, you would understand what Kenny is talking about. No one needed to see a global pandemic coming, all you had to see was who your new boss is going to be. Enough had been written about the subject in order for you to know what you were getting yourself into, had you done your due diligence. On day one of my selection, they showed me their full hand. I looked at it and understood how they rolled. I joined for my own personal reasons and with exactly the expectations Kenny mentioned, nothing more, nothing less. Coming here and thinking that by devoting your whole life and all your energy will somehow be rewarded or even noticed is a rookie mistake.

😂 I enjoyed your joke. Always wonder what determines one’s position on this seniority list......the amount of nonsense one spews perhaps?

Kennytheking 2nd May 2021 07:29

nimrodjoe

FFS, spare me your righteous indignation! Did you even bother looking up the story and try to understand my point. I don't defend the company actions...they reacted exactly as I expected them to. You appear to expect something different....

Anyway, I have made my point, you can "take it on board", or you can toss it, I don't really care.

nervous_novice 2nd May 2021 07:34

The one thing that we are in agreement on is Emirates is a 6 month renewable contract and not a stable career. At the end of the day, it’s Asia.I think many of us knew this before we came, what I never was prepared for is the mentality of certain pilots in our company. Most are on some sort of PPRUNe seniority list and we have had to read their complete drivel on here years.

Whilst former colleague go and work on factory floors 6 nights a week (if lucky), these chaps will be on here telling them “there’s loads of jobs out there”, “did you not do your homework before coming?”, “I suggest you read a story about a frog

Whilst Emirates advertises for local cadet pilots from school to join us in the midst of the most severe disruption to aviation on record filling many positions of those already doing the job who haven’t even been offered preferential treatment on rehiring ,guys on here saying “well I don’t understand what’s changed ? 🤔.. am I missing something ? They have always been hiring locals as far as I’m aware ” I often think the mentality and culture in this company comes from the top and with a ceo who was purposely doing optimistic interviews timed to the day of mass layoffs to disguise what was going on , what can we expect.

You mean like this kind of comment......

nervous_novice 2nd May 2021 08:28

No.........

nimrodjoe 2nd May 2021 08:39

Manage your expectations and stay below the line and take that on board. Exactly the kind of rubbish that people in Dubai say.
Thanks kenny.
Some of us actually took pride in being pilots. We gave it our all because it made us feel good.
Not just the bare minimum and ready to run at the drop of a hat.
Maybe the DCP was right, not everyone should be a pilot. Possibly he was referring to people like you Kenny, who just did the bare minimum and didn’t really care about being a pilot.

I’m sure the 2000 or so pilots and their families, would all agree completely with your point of view.
The, you didn’t fully understand what you were getting into, argument does not apply here.

nimrodjoe 2nd May 2021 08:44

nimrodjoe

Showed you their full hand? So you knew exactly, on the first day of selection. You were better than all of the 2000 pilots who got made redundant, because on the first day of selection you saw what they were really like?
What would be grandfather have said? Coming from an era of aviation that was completely different to ours.

14 6 2nd May 2021 09:52

Yes, on day one I was able to spot the fake sincerity towards me as an individual human being. If you or anyone else were unable to recognise on day one that they merely look at you as a number/consumable, then I can not help you. However, from the bottom of my heart I will tell you that with this attitude, many disappointments still lie ahead!

Forget about the grandfather comment, I knew you would not get it.....my mistake.

Honestly, I can not fathom how you could come up with this answer in response to what kenny is trying to tell you. This is a lost cause.......I am out of this argument, do and think whatever you like.

Whitemonk Returns 2nd May 2021 10:26

This thread has officially surpassed Fragrant Harbour as the delusional wackjob central, congratulations lads, doing about as good a job advertising yourselves to the world as EK have done...

mad757 2nd May 2021 11:32

‘Some of us actually took pride in being pilots. We gave it our all because it made us feel good.

And that Nimrod J is why your feeling pretty hard done by now! Too much invested in your status as a pilot when really you were just another number! Now that has been taken away not surprising you’re a bit upset.

Don’t get me wrong getting made redundant and leaving Dubai is a proper kick in the nuts but less so for those of us who didn’t invest so much in the job emotionally.

Other posters are only trying to point out that being more of a realist about what EK is really like makes you better prepared for the crap they throw at you. I don’t for one minute they think what was done regarding redundancies was ok but I really don’t know what you think they can do about it.

Fired600 2nd May 2021 12:42

I understand totally where NimrodJoe is coming from because I feel very similar. It wasn’t so much what they did but how they did it. We all expected cuts and possible redundancy. What we didn’t expect was the brutality, and method of selection, not to mention the handling of the redundant staff.

I understood that seniority meant little in EK but thought in my naivety that it would have had a bearing on who was selected. It turned out that it was based on sickness, and not just on shirkers but on genuine cases, ie cancer, surgery and pregnancy. Quality of work was ignored, past success in the simulator and on line, or otherwise was ignored. You could be Chuck Yeager and fired or the most junior FO with 1500hrs TT released to line and kept on.

Once the selection was made the handling of it, and the communication from the company was a disgrace. I for one had not one single email from the company expressing their regret or otherwise. There was no duty of care evident, not a word from anyone in management as to if we were even alive or how we were coping or if we needed help.

Whitemonk Returns

I think we, in fragrant harbour, are running you a close second.
At the first sign of trouble we had pilots calling for colleagues to be sacked to protect their incomes. Chinese calling for the 'foreigners' to go. Foreigners with a residence permit calling for non permit foreigners to go. And non permit foreigners calling for based pilots to go. You really cannot trust anybody in this cesspit.

Whitemonk Returns 2nd May 2021 21:52

Ah yes I have been following the drama over there since the beginning, an astonishing collection of creatures in both groups it seems... I was one of the cadet courses that got binned from Cathay in 2012 and decided not to join EK in 2016 due to a family illness... Looks like I'd have been out of job right now if I'd ended up at either! Still fancy a stint flying LH in the ME at some point as I have indicated on here before, but I'll be waiting a few years until I have enough cash in the bank that I only have to stay as long as I like, and not be too put out when I'm asked to leave.

VThokie2 3rd May 2021 01:08

Wow..... you guys need to stop fighting amongst yourselves! You guys and gals are worth so much more than what you are credited and paid for! Glad I left EK when I did in ‘17.... at a US LCC making 200k/ yr w/ 17-18 days off per month with no redeyes.. alas only a 320 right seater but after EK who cares ?!

Fired600 3rd May 2021 04:36

Thanks for that VThokie2 , great to know how great your life is and how much free time and money you earn, whilst I and many others on this thread wonder how to feed our families long term ! Classy
