EK Gentleman agreement with Copa Airlines

Hi folks

With EK coming soon to PTY more and more NG riders from Copa are considering to join EK.
One of the last pilots that left Copa to go to EK was told by Copa's VP of flight Ops that they had signed and agreement with EK and there where will be no hiring of pilots from Copa-EK or vice versa.

Anyone out there with a friend at HR has heard this Rumor.?

PS; I bet that after 6 months of lunching, only the former Copa pilots will be the ones doing the "world longest flight" Ass and back cracking!!! (Only good reason to stay pressurized for that long would be to come home)

Ghost_Rider737 14th Oct 2015 04:15

The flight to Panama would be operated by a 4 man crew.

Would probably be a 24 hour layover.

good luck getting home 😄

I hope my assumptions are false for the sake of the crew operating the flight.

Ghost_Rider737 are you willing to put a gentleman's bet on that? Until SQ receive their A350-900LR, EK will be operating the longest flight time between two city pairs, and therefore will come with a lot more media attention than usual. I can assure you it will not be a 24 hr layover.

I doubt there are many who work here who would consider the management team in any shape or form, as "gentlemen".

Besides, I doubt they would voluntarily cut off a potential source of new employees at the moment, the crew strength is starting to reach critical numbers.

If they can actually fly it. Rumor has it that the LR can't make it without the aux tanks, which were removed. Commercial did not know they were removed!

Like I said--rumor.

Thanks. I will check this one. Lots of Latinos and their spouses will be upset. PTY connections on COPA are all they talk about.

:ugh:

Not all of the 10 were even purchased with 1 AUX tank option (Boeing offers up to 3).

The frames that were delivered with it had it removed relatively quickly. Anyone who spreads the rumor that the B777-21HLRs are unable of DXB-PTY non stop does not know the aircraft.

Furthermore, they do not even have the maximum MTOW that Boeing offers (when theres no need to use it, there is no need to pay the associated overflight and landing fees). Those who fly it, know it has a 343,369kg MTOW. Boeing offers up to 347,452kg. Saved money on the purchase cost, and can always be purchased later on.

The westbound sector to Panama City, is blocked at 17h 35m. You are looking at 16h 45m to 17h of actual flight time. Initially they wont have data for STATCON, so they will be using the good old CONT 20.

Using 7.5t/hr (conservative) on the -21HLR even with a unrealistic 18 hour westbound sector you are looking at 135t of TRIP fuel which leaves an additional 10t for: 30 minutes FRSV, CONT, ALTN. As long as the fuels SG acceptable. If fuel volume is ever a factor due to temps (0440z DXB departure) they have the ability to keep it cool and hence lower the SG. They did this regularly for the DXB-SFO sector before they had polar area approval from the DGCA. And you wont be seeing EK251 taxing around for 45minute sin rush hour. They will arrange priority through on the ground through ATC like they always have for the ULR's. Very common back when the -31HER was doing DXB-SFO/LAX/IAH.

Considering the ready to go DOW on the fleet is ~163t, with a full fuel load of 145t that still leaves you a good 35t of payload. Config is 8/42/216 and with a full load of pax + bags you are still looking at ~8t of paying freight with a EZFW in the 198t range.

If they want more payload they can purchase the additional ~4t of MTOW from Boeing and if they really regularly need another 5700kg of fuel then they can re-install the single AUX tank. (No they did not trash them). Boeing actually recognized EK engineering for developing their own tooling in-house, to easily lift the AUX tank in the belly and remove it in short time.

To sum it up...this flight will be MTOW limited (structurally) and not fuel volume limited. Being on the fuel volume limited on the payload/range curve, each tanks gets you a additional ~200nm of range. (fixed ZFW).

Lucky they still have a 345. Seems if you want to carry a useful load a long way you need a bus.

Ex-Brazilian 15th Oct 2015 13:44

This rumour doesn't make any sense since Copa is not hiring foreigners for the moment. There is a big crisis starting in Latin America and I won't be surprised if they fire people.

On the other side, EK needs pilots

Mypprun3 15th Oct 2015 23:08

Ex Brazilian; Copa has stoped hiring Pilots of any nationality (even locals) DEC at least for the next 3 years, we are over 200 FOs waiting to be upgraded and so far no firing on their plans but if they do, Good bye to the foreigners with lower seniority and up, their plan is to be 100% local. (As most of the airlines in this latitudes)
In the other hand they are giving away Company Offered Leave of Absence to the pilots who want to do something else for up to 6months. (It will be cool to join EK without having to resign by requesting the leave of absence) if EK :yuk: then back

B-HKD thank you for sharing your knowledge, it will be cool to fly every now and then someone that sharp who likes to share experiences + knowledge and No show off and arrogance.

Back to the topic, anybody has heard anything about the No poaching agreement? :ugh::ugh:
Myppru3!!!

Ex-Brazilian 16th Oct 2015 21:31

Ok, why you think EK would sign a gentleman agreement with an airline that is not competing for pilots? I just can't understand.... we all know that EK offers a much better contract and work conditions.... CM is a company where you should buy your uniform with your own money, don't forget it :uhoh:

Kapitanleutnant 17th Oct 2015 02:19

Several years ago, I flew with an FO who had come to EK from Copa. I asked him if he felt more fatigued/tired there than at EK. He actually said Copa.

I later saw a captain's bid sheet from there and it was much like EK's. 9 days off and only 2 in a row max days off for the bid I saw. It looked pretty busy to say the least.

It was my opinion at that time, that to go to Copa would be the proverbial frying pan to the fire.

The only thing IMO better there was it was only 2 hours max time zone changes for all flights. Some all night stuff, but not nearly as much as EK does.

Ok, why you think EK would sign a gentleman agreement with an airline that is not competing for pilots?
This is not about Emirates and Copa competing for the same applicants but rather any agreement that maybe in place, would be designed to prevent movement from Copa to Emirates.

Perhaps such an agreement if it exists, was a pre requisite that had to be finalised prior the route starting? We are largely oblivious to the peripheral issues that require negotiation prior to the starting of a new route and especially to a new country. This maybe one of them?

A defintive answer is not likely to be found on this website and if you really want to know, then you would be better off enquiring elsewhere.

Ex-Brazilian 17th Oct 2015 14:46

Still can't understand this rumour.... So CM need a good reason to allow EK deliver 250 pax a day at PTY? I think CM would thanks a lot EK because they are facing now a big crisis in his sector and the conectivity that EK is bringing to PTY will make a lot of money to CM and Panama.

Not to mention the Company Unpaid Leave offered by CM, which means they have more pilots than they need and if EK take some of them would be great for CM I think, since firing people is not cheap. It's a win-win deal...

That's why I can't understand this rumour... :ugh:

BOEINGDRIVER16 17th Oct 2015 19:59

FALSE RUMOR

Beleive me, it is false!!!!! It is just a rumor. No one could believe that EK would sign such kind of agreement. Furthermore, Copa has enough pilots at the moment!!! Additionally, A friend of mine just signed with EK last month......

thatwasclose 18th Oct 2015 10:12

it is not a rumour. there is some type of agreement made. not sure of the actual contest, a straight ban or just a few, but there is an agreement .
well its a rumour site , but still.

BOEINGDRIVER16 5th Nov 2015 03:18

WHAT IS THE REALITY??

Copa Airlines is offering 6 months of leave to the pilots because they have too much pilots!!!!! But at the same time blocking the pilots to apply with Emirates?????????? What is the reason? Two friends of mine had the simulator canceled and the interview in Dubai without a solid reason...... It is legal????

thatwasclose 5th Nov 2015 19:24

If you are wondering if something like that is legal....you really do not want to come to Emirates. The shock may be to great.

Gustavo_CDT 13th May 2016 13:02

Any news about this? It seems to be completely true.

ifly462 13th May 2016 13:51

It is absolutely true. I have been affected by this no poach agreement. I dont understand why Copa would enter this while offering LOA. seems like a F U from management
