Any advice for non flt crew position are appreciated, pay, benefits etc...
and also lifestyle for family in MCT, any schools and decent hospitals?

Was there in the 90's and they had great schools and great hospitals so see no reason that it would change. a great place to live and great people.

Wonderful people.
Super safe.
Great scenery if you are willing to drive out of Muscat.
Couple of good shopping malls and more on the way.
Hotels are brilliant for an afternoon by the pool or an evening meal.

Cost of living is quite good.
Villas are big and rent is stable for now.
Be nice to everyone and you will get that back tenfold….be a rear-end and you will be gone within the year.

If you want glamour and glitz you have Dubai up the road.

Great country, great people! Last there 3 years ago (holiday after many years there in 80's - 90's). Progress has been rapid, great roads, hotels and shopping malls. Muscat and Salalah are still in throes of expansion but there is plenty of room!
Cannot comment on job scene now but (as someone said) you will get out a lot more than you put in if you approach it in the correct way.

Hello there,

Does anyone know the current minimum requirements for FOs at Oman Air, as well as the best way to apply. I've been searching the careers page of their website for months with no sign of any FO vacancies. I've read within other threads that some guys applied through Meccti/ Aviation Workforce, but even these websites provide no information (if the site even works). Additionally, does anyone have an estimated number of pilots that Oman Air is anticipated to hire for the 20 B737s they just ordered. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Any updated info on Oman Air and in particular the 737 fleet. I am considering applying and having passed through Muscat several times, i have a strong feeling that its a good bet for long term employment. Information such as: Salaries, Roster, Housing, Education, Leave and travel perks would be much appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

Remember they (Omani goverment) are pushing for 80% Omani's in the company. Might not affect you too much currently but could be nasty in the long run.

Oman Air are one of the loose airlines company not making any profits beside that they priorities jobs for Omani’s so I don’t consider it a secure job over all for a long term

I got few friends working there are not quite satisfied in terms of operation and country lifestyle
It’s freaking boring city “Muscat” and houses or neither apartments rentals are quite too high compare to the lifestyle that you gaining or expecting in return.

Everyone just consider it as passing point not as permanent job for good

I know pilots not even had completed a one year contract and they have to leave to another stable airlines such as Etihad of Turkish Airlines where they get better benefits .

I would rather be living & working at Emirates or Qatar than been in Oman if I had the choice to live & work in the gulf region.

I would keep Oman Air as a last option if I had multiple option prior to make any job commitment.

Do I still need to pay to fly for Oman??? I mean pay a huge amount of money to Meccti, I heard it around 4000usd besides paying my own air ticket to the screening.

Anyone has news about this Meccti etc. because what I see they are desperate for pilots, even lower there requirements to CPL.

@ JetJockey, Meccti is a recruiter based in Ras al K. I have been told they ask for 4000 USD after you have been hired for Services rendered by them. I heard of some other Crew, Not applying to Omanair BTW, who suddenly got presented with a piece of paper with that clause in it. 4000 does sound awfully steep for presenting your CV etc.
I think the word is out as People are Bypassing them to go direct to the Company avoiding this problem.

Expensive and not worth the effort
 
As many have said on this thread Omanair is the last choice if you want to fly for a Middle Eastern Carrier.

Muscat is a very expensive city to live in, in particular if you take your family with you. Omanair are not really set-up for expat pilots, they hire them because they have to not because they want you. There are also two seniority lists, one for the locals and one for the expats. A local will always overtake an expat.

Etihad would be my first choice. They look after expat pilots and Abu Dhabi is a better place to live.

If you are single Omanair may work for your a couple of years, not a good package for a pilot with a family.

Cpt 737 basic OMR 3381 plus 700 housing plus 182 allowance. Not included performance allowance (6/h up to 50 then 8/h then 35/h if above 75), school fees (around 2500)
FO 737 basic OMR 2442 plus 600 housing plus 172 allowance. perfo allowance (4/h up to 50 then 6/h then 25/h if above 75), school fees (around 2500)

Iznogood maybe you can help answer these too.

1. Is it enough to cover the school fee? because according to me when i checked for my kids it only covers 60%.:=

2. What about upgrade to wide body? Recently skippers joining direct entry.

3. What about upgrade on narrow body? Does the seniority list work?

4. How many night flights? How does a roster look like.

5. Furnishing allowance has been cancelled in the new contract is it true?

6. Why bond for rated guys like us? They dont provide type rating so why the bond.

7. Is the bond valid in Oman? let alone internationally

8. Heard they changed T&C in the middle of the contract?

Dear fellow aviator,
1. If you plan to send your kids to American/British schools of Muscat, then for sure it is gonna cost you dear. You will be spending lot of money from your pocket. And just so that you know you can't send the education allowance outta Muscat, your kids gotta be studying in Muscat to get the education allowance.

2. You can forget about getting an upgrade to a widebody especially if u are an expat. You will be low on seniority and the company policies are such that they favour mostly the locals to get to go on the wide body. Generally you stay on the same fleet that you came on for nearly 5-7 years depending on how many widebodys are coming.

3. Command upgrade in the narrow body for an expat is also a problem, same as above, the policies favour locals. You will have a 4000 hour FO(expat)who will be waiting for a 1000 hour FO(local)to get his command and then he may be upgraded if he has luck on his side. Lot of expat FOs come and within the first 1 year they leave.

4. Rosters are tough, 60-70 percent of your flying is in the night and you would be doing about 80 hours a months. Most of the flying is into India and the rest of the Middle East on the 737. You will have once a month upto 3 consecutive night flights where your fatigue levels are the highest. You get upto 8-9 days off a month and you can request 3 off block days of your choice, but you have to request this nearly a month in advance(they have a cutoff date every month for such requests).

5. Yes the furniture allowance has been removed as on 2014. You gotta buy your own furniture.

6. The bond is 1 year even though you are type rated, that is the general norm here. I have heard rumours that the bond period has increased to 2 years, I am not sure...

7. I reckon it is valid in OMAN and internationally, I am sorry I am no lawyer so I take it as that.

My 2 pence.....if you are coming in as a DEC you are set(that is if you don't have widebody aspirations and happy being a line captain). I shall summarise a few points:-

1. Work environment is good, low stress and fleet managers are very approachable.
2. Money is pretty decent compared the big 3 in the ME.(a lil less money for lesser stress, totally worth it, compared to the big 3).
3. Flight safety is pretty relaxed, if any issues you own up and file a report from your side and that's it. They generally don't harass you.
4. Quality of life is pretty good in Oman. Oman is the Jewel of the ME. It has a lot to offer to you and your family. There are mountains, beaches, desert, wadis and so much to do here. People are very friendly and helpful. OMAN is a very peaceful and a safe country if you are planning to move here.

Come with an educated mind on the ups and downs of the place. If what has been said up until now is acceptable to you then come on over.
For me: Oman is my home, and I love it here.

Spent 1 1/2 year and i m happy Of the choise I made
Ps about pM i received: i signed a contract to be Cpt on 737 so i DO NOT expect any Fleet upgrade nor to be an instructor . If They will offer me i will be glad but Is an extra .

Guys...

Short story to you all:

The company I work is facing kind of an economic crisis and recently opened a program where those who wish to fly abroad can sign and stay away for a couple of years with a guarantee that they could be taken back after a pre-determined time away (5yrs max, renewable every 6 months if I'm not wrong). Some aircraft are being returned and no upgrades will happen for quite some time.

Oddly, in the light of the recent facts, our management said that no mass firing is expected and they will try their best to keep all jobs secure. Believe it or not, they are honoring their word.

As we're flying much less hours and thus having more days offs (everyone is flying around 55hrs with 11 / 13 days off), we had a HUGE improvement in our QoL. I don't have to say that the money, on the other hand, became short, but not veeeeeeeeeery short. It's short, but manageable. I must say also that the company is very relaxed, with a great work environment !

Now comes the real question:

Some (FOs) are willing to go to Oman Air because they were told by the brokers that an upgrade could happen in the near future (1 or 2 yrs). Is this a fact or they are just mumbling the right words to get those pilots who are getting tired of sitting on the right seat for quite some time (8...9 yrs/LCC). They also think that will be able to save a good amount of money (our local currency is weak when compared to the dollar) and offer their family a safe place to live for some years !

I'm pretty happy where I'm, and would not go in such a quest, so, I'm here asking on behalf of a few friends which are about to make this move.

Is this a wise move or not ?

Good move if their goal is to save money: they will be able to save a lot of money.

Bad move if they expect to get a quick command.
It will take about 5-7 years to get command regardless of your experience.

I don't think with the new reality of Oil prices this carrier would be sustainable place with omanisation on the top of their agenda. Read online living costs have gone up since fuel prices have been increased, which will effect prices of daily commodities among others.

What about QR EY etc etc they all depends on oil for Their GDP and state balance
In the end if you don't like Oman and Oman Air don' t come here go to Dubai abu Dhabi Doha where you can fly shiny BIG Buddies all over the world and enjoy it

The school fees are expensive if you are considering schools like TAISM or American /British schools. Lets say the allowance would barely meet it. I am not sure about your preference, However if you are considering other institutions like Indian schools/srilankan schools , then they are way more cheaper. Sri lankan school offers the A/O levels of education. All of them are English medium Schools.

TAISM and American/ British schools will be of convenience since they are closer to the airport area, which would be in an around the place you would most likely choose your residence as well.
