Hi All.....heard emirates has stopped hiring at the moment but will start again soon.....anyone know why and when it'll start again.....Thanks

very much doubt it as 7 new 380's arriving before the end of the financial new year and would imagine a few 777's to carry the luggage :p

I either get forced leave or 91:59 hrs a month. Not quite sure whats going on.

According to JA at wash-up the other day, we are surplus 777 so some more to go 380. Really glad to hear that, it must mean my hours will be decreasing. Oh, wait... maybe it means I'll now be flying 100 hours! That seems more probable!

There's been six intake groups in the last two months, so hiring has not stopped. Before you ask, yes, it's been on all the fleets, but mainly on the B777 and the A380.

There appears to have been a slowdown in the numbers added to the seniority list over the last year (compared to recent years), but there is no doubt that with the aircraft still coming at a fair rate, and retirement of the older airframes taking it's own good time, recruitment will continue apace.

seems like the pilots i fly with these days are looking to leave for greener pastures. I'm guessing the attrition will pick up in the next six months or so.

Serious question here, not trolling - where are these great jobs?

So far the only job that sort of sounds feasible is the China Southern contract. However, on closer inspection it has two flaws based on the experiences of Pprune members reporting on the Ts and Cs forum:

(1) A base of your choice is promised, but on joining you get told to expect the first 18 months based in Guangzhou.

(2) The salary is great on paper (230k USD) but after paying tax in your preferred base (when/if you get it) it is likely to be no better than your cash element of the EK package. Then on top of that you have to pay housing and bills. Admittedly you'd probably take a pay cut to be based at home (I would if the lifestyle is right) but the likelihood of being stuck in Guangzhou chalks it off for me.

I've heard some mention Virgin. A company taking only FOs who furlough guys at the slightest hint of a sneeze in the East. A company with high load factors, yet losing millions of dollars. Nice new uniform designed by Vivienne Westwood though, that'll improve the margins.

BA for the Brits? Long long time to command and very few openings as they follow the pay to fly route and prefer cadets with Daddy's cash.

There's always the Loco's. Ryanair with their 'we change your home base on a weekly basis' policy, Jet 2 with their competitive Captains salary, comparable to turboprop skippers. Maybe WIZZ Air if €2500 euros per month can get you all the chicken kievs you want in the Ukraine.

With the US legacies looking at upwards of 2000 new hires between now and 2015 and increasing every year thereafter, it provides movement and better T & C's worldwide into many places that were held by Americans who left for home. With the new contracts signed by DL. UAL and AMR and especially with emphasis on the quality of life improvements and soft money increases, staying in the sandpit would be foolish in my opinion unless you have skeletons in your closet, over ~45 or can't be hired by the legacies.

Mr Good Cat---people are looking to go home in most cases. The choices are go home, maybe make less, certainly fly less (EK 92 hours a month is killing guys) and likely be treated better.

I'm content, for now, but many are not and I am surprised by how many pilots I know are talking about leaving. Not with immediate intent but rather looking and investigating what is available. Talking with their wives and families about possibilties. Nothing serious at the moment.

But the same happened at GF before its mass exodus--just guys looking. But the looking is dangerous!! When people start to consider their options, get the wife involved and onside suddenly when a choice appears they may well take it.

I understand that EK has lost 85 pilots in 2 months. They probably don't care. But in the long run it may hurt them. They should be trying to keep the experience and avoiding accidents like AF and Asiana.

The big risk is the Chinese carriers. They are desperate for experience and the contracts have been growing. It appears that 4 weeks on 2 weeks off is fairly standard and usually about $25,000/month.

If I was running one I'd offer 50%,66% and 75% contracts. Take the 50% example---half of $25,000 less $1500 for the additional training costs, is $11,000/month for 2 weeks on 4 weeks off. The other variations are obvious.

Almost every Aussie pilot over about 45 would jump at it and so would a whole lot of others!!! EK loses a whack of experience.

But like I said--I don't think they care. They will only care when and if it hits them in the face.

No more recruiting, all new hires will be from EK pilots kids from now on.
EK have for a long time been slipping viagra in the crew meals, so 100+ of fresh EK babies have been delivered from various female sources the last 20 years.
No visa for over 18 year old sons, so the only way to keep them in the UAE is to deliver them to the EK pilot factory.

not quite 25000 per month..That is exaggerating....

Actual deal is 240 000 AUD per annum at .93usd or $390000 equivalent AUD if grossed up,for tax- its tax free for ozzis as tax paid @20 % in china for you and sino ozzi tax treaty covers this...) ...

I live in MELB, do about 80'hours per month... We get Credit for sim, O/T after 80'hrs at 225 per hr, credit for leave ( 20 days per annum can be taken at anytime with 30'days notice, no need to bid) ....

This months roster... 17 days at home ( ten in a row) 14 away total ... Up and back MEL- CAN only with one paris in there ( 7 day sequence) ... Can walk into paris from the three star novatel on the two day slip... get free lunches and breakfasts!

You can opt for lower monthly hours - 60 with less cash if you want lifestyle... Guys are living in BNE SYD MEL , soon AKL with Vancouver and EU next...

The management take us for dinner , lunch, beers river cruises etc ...to ask is how we like it , can we help,with ideas etc to boost the company...Just like EK eh...

After 12 years in EK this is the easiest ( oh I forgot... half the 80'hours is spent in the bunk ...actually I Slept in the crew rest for the take off the other day to Perth... 7.5 hours flight , four pilots!! And landed with 20 tonnes... ( most of the time 15 plus!) ...

If first class is not full you can sleep there..as the cabin crew do..

Crew are friendly, FOs keen and do all the work including filling out your crew dec if you let them!!!

It is like the great wall of china ... Hard to climb over but once on the other side... Easy!!!

not perfect but pretty good ... sim months can drag on down in zhuhai but now we have sourced a few good bars etc it is not too bad...

So go register and see what the grass is like over a different septic tank...

Some 330 guys with Boeing experience have been asked to go to the 787 .. And it might deploy to Oz ...

Oh... CSA is Third largest carrier in world I think... 5600 pilots ... 430 aircraft ... 85 million pax carried and expanding...( double EKs size) ... And there are only about thirty foreign captains total so the wave hasnt even started!!!

Great deal for ozzis or kiwis looking to get home eventually... EK was great for me but once a hired gun... Always one I guess...

With the greatest possible respect, Woodja - I'd want to see a balanced account from a line Captain not affiliated with any Australian recruitment agency working for the benefit of the airline.

I'm not saying that what you've posted isn't true, just that it raises a few eyebrows based on your previous salesman type postings about Longreach and CSA.

If there are only 30 expat Captains working at CSA despite the apparently amazing contract then this also makes me suspicious.

I hope you're right though... Even though I'm perfectly satisfied so far with what EK currently offers compared to the rest of the industry, eventually I want to go home on a reasonable contract earning at least 75% of the EK salary after tax.

That's a different experience than the one I generally get. Most guys I fly with are happy with the job, don't seem to complain too much about rosters although they dislike the bull**** that comes with it from up above. Having said that they are FOs not Captains so maybe the feeling is a little different from the left.

Interestingly most US guys I fly with are not considering a return home despite the uptake in recruitment but the US majors. I guess they've got used to the money here. Most do say they would consider a return in a few years once they've git a couple of years of command and sorted their finances. This job certainly has a shelf life. I guess the average stay is something like 10-12 years?

Tax treaties mean you only pay the difference between Aussie and overseas tax, if the overseas tax is lower.

As the top Aussie marginal rate is 45%, I don't see how you get away with paying 20% in China, and none at home.

Not necessarily. Each tax treaty is unique. Some are as you describe and others as Woodja described. It can also vary within the treaty depending on the industry in question. At least in the case of Canadian treaties.
