hey kuku, i think you are right i just had the news 2 days ago, but i don't know why the company should hire direct entry captains since they are many qualified F/Os who meet the requirements. may be PAY PINUTS AND GET MONKEYS?:eek:

Have any of you read the comments of Jamil Wafa as reported in the GDN on Sunday. Gulf Air Needs a Fresh Start

Some of the comments in this piece are very hard hitting and critical of Gulf Air. Most of what he says is bang on correct but critisisms of this level have never been published in any Gulf newspaper before.
Jamil Wafa is not some pissed of business man with a grudge against Gulf Air but is in many ways an aviation insider in Bahrain.
Why these comments have been published just 1 day before a GA board meeting has been the point of some discussion here. It is speculated, that the owning states are about to wind up Gulf Air. The board meeting has asked the owning states to pay $272.5 Million in order to recapitalise GA just as Mr. Wafa has said. The owners have said they will decide by April 30.
If the owners decide to wind up Gulf Air then Bahrain and Abu Dhabi will need to start up their own airlines. Mr. Wafa is involved in the stalled Dilmun Air project which would effectively become Bahrain Air.
The informed speculation here has suggested that, he has been given tacit approval to publish his remarks as a way of softening up the blow if and when it does come.
I think that the adverts for A320 pilots are in line with the stated policy to increase the shorthaul particularly around the gulf but the owners may not allow the policy to be implemented.

What chance of Qatar & Oman being "bought out" of Gulf Air?

it would be un-Arabic to "wind up" Gulf Air. Qatar and Oman would simply stop putting capital into GF and concentrate on their own airlines. It would be up to Abu Dhabi and Bahrain to decide on the future and (more importantly) the direction to which GF is to take.either way, GF is about to enter the real world of going it alone without family inheritance.

BAE146 you say that GF is about to enter the real world. I certainly hope that it gets the chance to as 272.5 million is a lot of money for the states to cough up and Oman and Qatar have had no interest in GF for years now.

It must also be remebered that the other airlines in the Gulf do not realy fight fair. Qatar airways has its fuel bill paid for by the goverment and Emirates is suported by DNATA and the Dubai goverment and are never expected to make a profit.

A touch of bias creeping in there methinks. Your comment "Emirates is suported by DNATA and the Dubai goverment and are never expected to make a profit" is a wee bit off, even with my fully developed "Cynical Program" installed, it is hard not to realise that Emirates has been making BIG profits for quite a few years, the in house quote that we have been making profit from our second year may be open to interpretaion, but certainly the last half dozen years have been Extremely profitable.
If you knew how the profit share was worked out here, you would realise that profit is more likely to be hidden than made up.

I think Hogwash does have a point. Unfortunately for GF, the governments are not helping as much as they used to. In addition, some of them insist on having certain international routes even though they are VERY unprofitable (this is the major problem of having 4 hubs). GF management are not allowed to cancel these routes and so they have no choice but to give in to their demands. If those governments would help GF offset the losses on those routes (by giving incentives and better prices on fuel, landing and handling charges, etc...), then all would be well.

Most carriers in the Middle East are losing tons of money, and the governments have no choice but to bail them out because they cannot afford to have their national airline go under. Given that there are 4 owners here (so all costs are divided by 4), it can't be that tough for the owners to cough up the money, can it?

Over the weekend a little birdy told me that Oman and Qatar are going to pull out this week and that the 272.5 mill has been secured from Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, although I have no idea where Bahrain thinks its going to get that sort of money.

That's what I'd heard - GF to become Abu Dhabi and Bahrain only. Can only be a good thing IMO, and not before time. If the cash is found and the, er, "wastage" stopped, looks like GF may have a fighting chance.
