Which ME airline? (the idle dreamer thread)

Hello Everybody !

I am an experienced F/0 with 6000 TT , on A320/330 and recently A340. My total flight experience on [I]flybywire Airbus[I] is 5500TT

At moment i am flying MFF 330/340. But i am pessimist about my retirement pay in the future.

What are the therms and working conditions onthese multicultural working companies? For the most foreigners what is the general opinion?

I am considering applying to these companies. With my experience , do you think i have good chances for a fast upgrade?

Looking to hear from someone.

Happy Landings

alghazal 14th Sep 2008 05:05

Up to now, it was up to 2 years or so , but things are changing.

Taking into account the number of DEC on all fleet, and the seniority now, I would say between 4 to 5 years to command on A320.

A few aircrafts are supposed to be delivered but nothing that can influence significantly the upgrade number.

EK should be the same but at least you get a command on a widebody, and you get proper accomodation and you get a pension plan.

Don't know about QR.

Air Arabia or Wanatiya in Kuwait could be an option for quicker command.

loc22550 14th Sep 2008 07:37

Trancada;

I you are worried about your PENSION plan, AVOID Qatar airways.
QATAR AIRWAYS= NO PENSION.(no bonus,no extra...nothing)
Just have a look at their respective website(EK,EY,QR..)and just compare by yourself the advantage...

Ek is probably the best option as a career airline in the Gulf.
I presume Alghazal was talking about Etihad.
Cheers.

orangedriver 14th Sep 2008 07:50

Go and get a command on a jet in Asia or wherever you can get a direct entry position. Work for a year or two to get PIC time and then apply for a left seat with EY. Beats sitting in the right seat for years and then going through all the potential hassle of an upgrade.

So is there any good choice?

trancada is working for an EU flag carrier and still thinking of leaving, do you have any good choice to share with him?

Cheers.

Emirates,Etihad, or Fly Dubai?

I know this could be quite subjective, but was wondering if one was looking at coming to the UAE. Where the best place for an ex-pat may be? I would appreciate any input on what those in the know may recommend? I do realize that there are numerous forums on Emirates and Etihad. However there is still very little on Flydubai… Any constructive comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Emirates, Etihad, or Fly Dubai?
Here we go again...

concordino 29th Sep 2008 23:10

The answers you get from this forum will mostly confuse you... You will make up your mind in due time and may join one of the three... eventualy all choices will hold correct if you ask me...

The best way, try to get an interview with each airline and decide for yourself.

Wizofoz 30th Sep 2008 04:54

I think the preference would be in the order you listed them.

Firstly because of housing:- EK are in a mess, but will eventually have a villa (and I believe the new ones are quite nice) for everyone entitled to one. EY have had famililes in aparments for a couple of years and there doesn't seem to be any solution for it. FlyDubai are offering an allowence which is simply inadequate.

EK pay a bonus in profitable years (read every year- but maybe not this year!!). EY have some small scheme, FlyDubai is an unkonwn quantity.

I'm sure FlyDubai will be a good company for what it is, but there are advantages to working for a premium carrier, and I imagine you'd work pretty hard doing short turn-arounds for an LCC.

Thanks for the insight gents!

Emirates . Nothing can compare in the Gulf . If you look at a total Package

Consideration Married with 3 children

Full Basic Salary from day One . Even when training
Competitive Salary increment each year however subject to approval ( read ;may not approve) upto 15 payscales
Accommodation provided ( furnished incluidng water power and local telephone)
Adddittional Flying allowance paid per hour .( not much and does'nt tempt you from not going on vacation) But every little helps
Transport to work and back ( Audi Estate) so no seocnd car and no reason to stay awake during late night pick ups and drops
Schooling assistance for upto 3 kids upto their 19th Birthday ( you pay apporx 10%) There is a maximumm cap
Medical for Self and family for inpatient and Insurance cover for Outpaitent provided by company for emplyee and discounted premimum paid by employee for family
Free uniform , suitcase shoes pajamas for ULR
Provident fund contirbution 12-15% based on service
Tickets for self and family and ( one set confirmed every year)
Retirement tickets plus
Medical cover insurance continues after retirement provided premimums paid by employee
Meal allowance abroad -not the highest allowance by a long short .Enough in most places
First class hotels ( most stations)
Rostering . A bidding system that generally works
6 weeks of leave Has to be split so as to afford more staff to go on leave in peak period
Emirates Pilots Club ( pilots organised and very succesfull club memebrship at choice clubs)
quicker connections when travelling on vacations
Great Equipment to fly
Great pilots to fly with
Great destinations
Rapid promotion prospect
Stable Upper Management
Profit Share program
Generally a reasonable fleet managment
Great training facilities
Still expanding .......................
.........................................

Disadvantage

Inflation ...But also in Ethihad , Same for Fly Dubai and more so for Qatar
Traffic . Slightly less in Abudhabi ,Same for Fly Dubai more so for Qatar
Poor Jumpseat Policy . Etihas you can use Jumpseat , Fly dubai will probably be the same as EK and Qatar has a jump seat policy
No Bases or communting rosters ,neither does Etihad or Qatar

Etihad, Qatar, Emirates.

Emirates is the only one that needs to make a profit and in the current climate....

Which one would you choose or not.

Gulf Air

Whooooaa that was the joke of the day:D

"Sweetie" are you aware of the fact that about 150 ex GF pilots fly in EK and about another 150 applied but did not pass the interview...
So far I know of one EK pilot who joined GF from EK and that is a Bahraini national (ex GF cadet) who rejoined GF as Management Pilot....makes you think:rolleyes:

Homo Ludens 10th Mar 2009 18:19

Which? One.
Cheers!

tbaylx 11th Mar 2009 01:12

Last CP B767 was likely who he was referring too.

Saltaire 11th Mar 2009 02:45

I think most would agree EK has always been the airline for the ME. Etihad has the quicker upgrade but a bit messy and disjointed. I do remember years ago, those that didn't make it through the EK interview went up to Etihad and found work...

MYROSTERSUCKS 11th Mar 2009 07:36

Hi all.
Is the day to day life ( esp for the family) very different in Dubai/Abudhabi and Doha or more or less the same? In terms of facilities/things to do/ schools/ any discrimination??
Thanks!

NewCrewMember 16th Mar 2009 12:41

QR or Ey which one should i work for?

Hi people

I am fortunate to have an offer with both comapnies but don't know which to choose as they both offer the same package. How come there are always negative comments on pprune.org about QR, surley there are people on here that work for QR and are very happy in their job?????????? Please can anyone give me some advice, thanks:ugh:

Iver 16th Mar 2009 13:01

Both are comparable. Similiar fleets. I would compare lifestyle/QOL in Doha vs. AUH as well as potential upgrade time. Fleet offer might also make a difference - if you are offered 777 at QR and A320/A319 at EY that might be a consideration depending upon your preferences of short haul vs. long haul.

Why don't you tell us about your impressions of QR and EY too. Is there a big pay difference for newhires?

loc22550 16th Mar 2009 13:09

-Same package: well not sure:

-(BASIC much more higher with EY ,but flying allowance less, so for a regular month not that much difference between EY& QR, only when you don't fly (leave..)you will see the difference with EY,Don't known about the end of service benefit in EY,but surely again based on the BASIC,so..

-Last but not least:Kindly note that the annual increase on the basic with EY is not time limited.
In QR after..4 YEARS ONLY in the respective grade you don't have any increase!!I don't known if they don't want people to stay too long here or what, but looks very strange to me!
So if you plan for long term..Definetly EY package will become better.

-Abu Dhabi is not DOHA and vice&versa.
Cheers.

Jetjock330 16th Mar 2009 13:56

From another angle

I know of many pilots that left QR to join EY, but I don't know anyone who left EY to join QR.

ArkPilot 16th Mar 2009 14:21

NCM,

If you are going to base your choice on what is posted here, PLEASE choose EY!:yuk:

NewCrewMember 16th Mar 2009 15:10

:DThanks guys for all your responses. So far i have come to the conclusion that i really like the sound of EY and feel ok but not fantastic about QR. As this is a new venture into aviation for me, as far as monies and type of aircraft i will be working on, well honestly its just all blown over my head i don't really understand any of it and suppose won't know about which aircraft i will be on until training, so i am non the wiser but thanks for the advice.
With regards to the countrys i just love to learn about new cultures and customs so Doha or Abu Dhabi i don't mind. I guess my main concern was if Qatar was a place you could live long term and QR an airline you could work for long term or if people generally forfilled their contract and left? My situation at the minute is that Etihad training doesn't start till end of sep (they are waiting for aircraft) whereas Qatar i can go end of april. Do i wait for EY and hope they don't withdraw the offerr come september (credit crunch is only getting worse not better) or do i go with QR and be safe in the knowledge i have a great job? I guess this is only a question i can answer, but i was hoping for an insight and you guys have given me that so thanks very much i really appreciate it:ok:

KRUGERFLAP 16th Mar 2009 15:19

I guess you a cabin crew. But even as a cabin crew.Life in EY is better.Don't even think.Go to EY .

stratus2000 16th Mar 2009 15:56

Hello NewCrewMember ,

Can you tell us when did you apply for this both airlines?
What was the assassment for those airline?
What is your experience?

Thanks.

Emma Gemma 16th Mar 2009 18:46

Long-term career in QR? Nothing is certain down there. Most people don't even seem finish their two year contract because they either flee or get sacked before the end of it.

I stayed for three and a half years but I also had my reasons.

NewCrewMember 16th Mar 2009 18:50

Probably not a question i should ask but in your experience would it be easy to start with Qatar and then leave to work for etihad? I know i have to pay monies back to Qatar but that aside how easy would this be. Would Qatar quickly withdraw my visa on resignation and ban me from re entering the middle east?
