pilotcpb 2nd Nov 2011 02:48

i spent the last 10 days reading this entire thread. i have now read all 171 pages. i managed to come up with a few questions:

1. when joining, will HR be a bit flexible with the date i actually fly to doha? i ask this because one chap seems to have arrived at his lodging at 7am and was expected back to be back at HQ at 9am for a full day of fun..... i would like a day to get used to the place a bit before the game starts.

2. it has been a month now since i completed the interview but i have received no word on the outcome. i am anxious because i have another offer but qatar is my top choice and i really want to know soon:ugh: it seems the vast majority of applicants who wait were successful. LATELY, are there many exceptions to this that i have missed?

3. is it a bad idea to contact HR by phone? i KNOW they are busy, but will it create a bad impression? reference above

4. anyone care to expand on the story about a captain who was fired for drinking a bottle of evian? the story from over 2 years ago was very vague.

5. i enjoy cycling and mountain biking. after visiting doha i concluded that only a mad nutter would take to the streets on a bike, but there is a cycling club called qatar chain reaction. anybody familiar with this group?

6. any rosters on the a320/777? just kidding:}

TwoTone-7 2nd Nov 2011 12:55

1. First day usually starts on a Sunday. You can arrive in Doha on Friday/Sat.

2. Max wait is normally 6 weeks.

3. Try calling, good luck getting through. I don't see it being a problem.

4. No idea.

5. Friend of mine goes cycling 100 km each weekend. Go early morning, avoid the heat and go on the outskirts near Lusail where the traffic is less.

6. 777 working harder than ever with new bunk time rules. A320 working hard as always.

Best way to cycle is to drive out to a more remote place and bike around the desert it can be fun an challenging especially with the variations in the hardness of the sand.

Regards

gdukkoq 2nd Nov 2011 20:33

Worst pick up line ever :E try I pay good money for the question bank :E
And guys stop the "anyone is going for the interview the... ?" QR gets more than 50 candidates everyweek, they don't stop! And they won't stop (...P Diddy :})

av8tordude 2nd Nov 2011 23:08

For those who are interested. The two sites I have been using to prepare myself for the interview are listed below. This is NOT an endorsement! Just helping my fellow pilots prepare for the JAA Exams

JAA ATPL Question Bank | AviationTire.com

This site is free with a caveat. You will only have access to about 30% of the question bank and the practice exam will randomly select questions from that 30%. If you want access to the entire question bank, it cost 49.99 EUR.

jaaquestions.org

This site is absolutely free! The only requirement is that you must register. You have access to all the JAA question bank. It also allows you to take randomly generated exam base on the subject chosen.

The two sites vary in regards to user interface.

Banks in Qatar

I would love to know where Pilots in Qatar do the Banking.
It seems like there are locals and foreign based Banks. Which ones would you recommend?
I will most likely transfer money back and forth fom Qatar and USA as I still have some buisness to run (real estates,..) until I sell most of my properties in the USA.

The Deconneur.

blusky75 3rd Nov 2011 19:26

not sure but i understood u must have the account in their Bank, which is located also in the building

av8tordude 3rd Nov 2011 19:34

Deconneur,

It would seem the question you are asking has been answered already in a thread that you started. You should check for your answer there.

Hi folks,

for those in DOH i have a question about the medical.

I have held a class 1 all my life, and only in the last 2 years (since being in JP) have i been informed that i have an irregular heartbeat.

With that in mind, they still give me a class 1 every time, and they tell me to not worry about it - but their little machine says IRREGULAR RHYTHM.

The doc says that every half a dozen beats or so i get an extra small beat.

Does anyone have any info about the medical in DOH?

Thanks

Red

safelife 4th Nov 2011 09:45

That's normally connected to considerable intake of coffein.
No coffee no coke two weeks before medical should do it.

av8tordude 4th Nov 2011 23:50

natashacabin80

I posted the links for us Americans who are not familiar with the questions in the JAA question bank. Although a lot of questions, I've been focusing my studies on performance and meteorology. I have other gouges, but I can't count on getting the same question when I have my interview. Is it overkill? Maybe, but at least I know I'll be fully prepare for anything they throw at me.

gdukkoq 6th Nov 2011 07:51

QR waiting Time.... After the interview I waited 4 weeks to get the news that I passed. Now I'm on my 4th week of waiting for the contract. After that how long again till I get a joining date... I wake up everyday hoping to receive a mail, but it takes forever...

ITO 6th Nov 2011 08:57

Oh man I know what you are going through ! Me also, every morning I wake up, I hope that I`ll get an E-mail with an Interview date. It has been now almost a month since I got a first reply asking me to upload some documents. Holding thumbs, the waiting is killing though !

gdukkoq,ITO
Hi guys! We know itīs really a hard time that sometimes we must pass trhough but remember... the patience is the key of successful assessment!
Try to control the anxiety. The HR guys are working hard to comply the schedule but unfortunately sometime they donīt.
Usually they give 4 weeks to send some new information, after that, if you donīt receive none email, just call them.
There are so many guys applying at the same time.
Anyway, Good luck for you!
Cheers! :ok:

patrickr82 6th Nov 2011 18:51

So is it a general consensus that the bad news travels faster than good? A week or so to get the bad news?

jibba_jabba 6th Nov 2011 21:28

yes, I know some people that got the bad news after one week or so.

So I believe that the answer is bad news is quicker'
good news is longer.

Its been 4 weeks for me and still no email so I take that it is good news coming.

Also its Ramadan now so they only work half days I believe so it may stretch out a tad longer unfortunately.

good luck all.
:ok:

younesjazouli 7th Nov 2011 00:21

Ramadan was during August....Nevermind !

imnotwhoyouthinkiam 7th Nov 2011 02:28

jibba jabba, its currently eid-Al-Adha, which is a celebration linked to Hajj. Offices will be closed for 2 or 3 days.

Does anyone know if there is any problem moving to Qatar with 2 dogs? ( a golden retriever and a boxer)

Thanks

Hey thats what I thought too! But I obviously got a bum steer from an incorrect website! Thanks I stand corrected!

maybe I better write HR an email to find out???

flyforfood1 7th Nov 2011 07:27

Dogs - apart from the 45-50 degree heat for 9 months of the year, if you can, leave them in Spain (or wherever you are coming from I would) with someone it would certainly be easier on them.

If you do decide to bring them over, do it in the winter months, its not uncommon for the ground handlers to leave dogs outside the aircraft whilst they sort the baggage and in this searing heat dogs like yours wouldn't last long!

Dog's aren't welcome here, you'll have to go out - away from anyone to walk them, often into the desert. They will spend their lives in air-conditioning and if you end up in Holiday Villas, your not allowed any pets anyway.

stud7094 7th Nov 2011 18:02

Hey all,

I have a few questions. I am new to the site but before I posted I read all 172 pages. I have finished the application 2 weeks ago and am waiting for a call for an interview. I have 5000TT and 4000 turbojet and fly in the USA.

1. I looked for info on the health care but it is tough to find anything out. My wife and I have a 1 year old and would like to have another. Is it possible to have a baby over there or does the health care not deal with maternity? (just trying to plan the future a bit)

2. Can you purchase a seperate health care plan just for this?

I appreciate any answers (actually my wife will) and hopefully will see you there soon. :)

porksword 7th Nov 2011 18:11

hi all,

Is it a given that new hires go straight on the 320, or do some get lucky with 330,T7 etc.?

clearedfortaxi 7th Nov 2011 19:29

Can anyone clarify the HOURS on the application form.

For First officer time, do I put the PICUS(Pilot flying) time as PIC or does it all go down as Copilot?

stud7094 7th Nov 2011 23:22

where is the 320 roster you are talking about? I cannot find it anywhere

blusky75 7th Nov 2011 23:29

I got the T7... Maybe i m lucky... But lets wait.. I understood they can change your fleet when u arrive in Doha.
I know that they need pilots mainly on Airbus fleet. But this is what i read here or what my friends told me.

blusky75 7th Nov 2011 23:31

PICUS is only when you fly as Captain. For first officer use the P2...

Deconneur 8th Nov 2011 02:12

health insurance

1. I looked for info on the health care but it is tough to find anything out. My wife and I have a 1 year old and would like to have another. Is it possible to have a baby over there or does the health care not deal with maternity? (just trying to plan the future a bit)
I remember at the interview, they mentioned about Maternity not being covered. It was also pointed out that you could buy your own insurance and since you will be a resident of qatar(because you work there), you will have access to the state run Hospital for cheap. I must say that the hospital are top notch, modern with western doctors on most of them

2. Can you purchase a seperate health care plan just for this?

Yes. Do noy know exactly how much it will cost.

I have a friend (not an airman) who is telling me about those stuff
I will be in training in Doha in the near future (hopefully) and will let u know more then. Unles someone living there could explain more...
