Commuting pilot,

At this time I understand that A320 DEC are not really needed by Qatar because of the huge number of DEC that is already on the holding pool. That might be the reason of such a delay in calling you. On the other hand you can never know how and when Qatar is calling you for the interview because they really do not care about you as a single, they manage big numbers.
My best advice is to wait, sooner or later they will call you.

It is still Ramadan there so things are even going slower than usual, usually after a couple of months you get the PSA to do (don't know if that changed). With the Ramadan on the middle it might take a month longer.

Selfmade92,

I do not know anyone, but since there are no unions in Qatar and the airline is managed like a family business I wouldn't be surprised at all. (Maybe because the whole Qatar is OWNED by a family)
And actually I don't care.
Why do you ask?

sweetdeer 16th Aug 2015 23:30

news

Ramadan ended a month ago...

I did the interview 40 days ago still no reply.
anybody experienced a long waiting period like that?

Southpole 17th Aug 2015 00:17

You are right! ramadan ended on the 17th of July..
Sorry, I have been very busy and did not realize how fast days were passing.

40 days? Well usually bad news come first.. Longer than average but I stick with my opinion that in Qatar you don't have a standard time, you just wait..

Good luck!

casablanca 17th Aug 2015 05:39

@selfmade92......
Sounds like you are referring to the second officer program, where as new cadets directly from flight school start flying 320, 330 or even 787.

Selfmade92 18th Aug 2015 16:49

@Southpole: Couple of friends of my dad are in senior management in Qatar Airways and I just wanted to see if it happened before, if anyone would know.

Boeingbob898 18th Aug 2015 19:03

Hi guys. I attended selection for non type rated 777/787 First Officer over 4 months back. After many weeks waiting I heard back that I'd been successful but was in the holding pool until further notice. Now around 3 months in the holding pool. Has anyone been or is in a similar situation shed some light on how long this may go on for ?

Southpole 18th Aug 2015 22:42

Selfmade92,

Good for you, I think in Qatar anything is possible. Just change your nick then, dadmade92 could fit better :)

Boeingbob898,

You'll find at least 300 pilots in your position.. I am keeping low.
I was called yesterday after 6 months. Cpt Airbus.

Boeingbob898 19th Aug 2015 03:22

Thanks southpole, if you don't mind me asking when they called you yesterday when is your start date ? Just worried as I don't won't to be forgotten about in the holding pool !!!

Boeinglad 19th Aug 2015 11:42

Still no news

Good for you southpole, for me still no news, i have only boeing experience and interviewed in jan 2015 for dec 787!

Southpole 19th Aug 2015 15:13

Thanks guys, details will be sent in two weeks, joining date around November/December. They called also my sim partner, Cpt Airbus as well.
I was interviewed on February.

Boeinglad 21st Aug 2015 17:27

Status changed

Today my status has changed into on hold, it used to be personal interview. Is anything happening?

ppfunrune 22nd Aug 2015 01:19

holding pool

In my case,I was swimming in the holding pool for nearly two years.
Non rated FO.

so don't hurry up. just relax and wait for two years more or less.
and as a rumor,I hear QR stopped hiring direct captain postions.
But maybe many exceptions.

good luck.

de facto 22nd Aug 2015 06:37

Yes you are in a holding pool and be ready to start orbiting.
After a year without clearance to a start date you will have to divert back to phase 1/aka screening.
Hope you did not give notice to your current airline.

Boeinglad 22nd Aug 2015 06:56

I had my interview in jan 2015 and good news in march but the status has been always personal interview, after months in the holding pool they decided to update my status into on hold. Why that now?

Southpole 22nd Aug 2015 15:54

Boeinglad,

The status of your application is really not important, they just deal with this stuff when they have nothing more to do. Let's say it is not their primary concern to update the online status of people's accounts.
You are in the pool since you passed the interview, why did they write it just now? I wouldn't rely on that for being updated on my position.
Just sit back and relax, would be even better to forget about qatar airways, they will call you.

I was called and after reading you post I went to check my account: ON HOLD.

Boeinglad 22nd Aug 2015 22:36

Thanks.. Do you have Airbus experience?

Southpole 23rd Aug 2015 14:09

Yes I am on Airbus

gypsyexpat 23rd Aug 2015 14:28

CALL FROM QR

I've been called 4 days ago for a position of A320 DEC but I have applied for NTR DEC B787 and passed all screening process on last feb 15, my experience is total time of 12000hrs with more than 5000 hrs on long haul flights and W/B, PIC more than 4500hr of which more than PIC 2000 on W/B but currently flying A320.
So the guy from HR on phone was really vague about expected date of join (nov or dec 15) and never tells about the fleet assignment. At the end of his talking I said to be deeply interested in joining QR but just please confirm me that we are talking about a course on B787 or B777 or any other W/B. Replay was "captain we are looking only for A320 rated DEC, are you interested?" and my replay was, "no thanks because as you notice from my application and your interview call, I applied for NTR B787, I'm not moving in the same airplane to QR". After few minute I received an unfair email (noreplay) from QR saying" We understand and respect your decision to decline our offer for the position of Non Type Rated Captain B787 | Qatar Airways" VERY FUNNY THOSE GUYS....THEY PUT YOU IN AN HOLD FOR MONTHS WITHOUT ANY NEWS AND THEY CALL YOU TO OFFER A DIFFERENT FLEET THAN YOU APPLIED FOR AND EVENTUALLY WRITING THAT YOU DECLINE THE POSITION YOU HAD APPLIED FOR BUT THEY NEVER OFFERED YOU". If reality in QR is like that, thanks God went like this.

Obbie 23rd Aug 2015 17:44

And you are surprised because..............?

Guys, if you want to come here to fly and make money then by all means.
But if you see this place as simply a type rating grab and don't plan to stay
any longer than necessary, then do yourself a favor and don't, your experience
will most likely only frustrate you.

Anna452 23rd Aug 2015 20:42

ptr120 can i ask what position you applied for? Did you finish your interview? how did it go?

WrldWide 24th Aug 2015 00:54

gypsyexpat,
The way it was explained to me when I joined is: QCAA will only accept a DEC applicant that has at least 6 months remaining on his PC. As you were current on the 320 that is what they were offering.

I was given NTR 777 but was coming from another widebody.

Bottom line is QCAA dictates the requirements.

Unfortunately, communication with the applicants apparently isn't that good.

Sorry it didn't work out for you.

gypsyexpat 24th Aug 2015 05:43

yep apparently communication is not the best skill of QR....I realize that!!!
anyway this was my experience and with me they weren't so clear. Anyone here has his own experience and plan, so in my case if I applied for a position and you (company) call me for an assessment in that position, I'm expecting to be call for that position otherwise, I have the right to save my annual leave for my family or my self instead of spending it to travel in Doha and prepare myself for an interview for a month before. Again this is my point of view.... Cheers

Southpole 24th Aug 2015 17:06

Dear Ravi Shankar,

It was quite a while I was not reading such a useless post! Thanks!
I'd like to remind you that it was Qatar airways that called gypsy and many others for an interview on the 787.. Plus,if after 13/14 years in Qatar you still believe that they are caring about your seniority well... You made my day!
And good luck!

Anna452 24th Aug 2015 19:20

Guys have you seen this page::

Qatar Airways Group Internal Jobs Site

We can even see the job grades here.

Leemankin 25th Aug 2015 09:03

To gypsie,
Good for you to have found out their "tricks", I would have been pissed the same....however, for me I was called up also however on the same type as I applied for.
To Southpole,
Have you got your offer letter? I was called up as well, but have lots and lots of docs to submit....meantime no offer letter. It doesn't motivate me anymore accomplishing all this without any firm offer.
To whom it may concern,
Based on your experience, is there any certainty as to how long an offer letter gets sent? Is it OK to trust QA HR based on phone call alone? Or is this another "trick"...meaning there is no certainty to anything they say?..and ..better wait for the contract offer? If that is so....does that validate what happened to gypsyexpat? Just kinda worried about what kinda work culture they got? Any comment, good or bad is appreciate..

studentpilotC172 25th Aug 2015 10:19

Long Wait

Went for the interview On Jan 15 waited for the reply 6 months.Passed! Put in the pool and told to be wait.

Southpole 25th Aug 2015 10:41

Leemankin,

I was told contract offer within two weeks from the phone call. As for now I just had to fill an online form with details I believe they should already have.. I am taking it with philosophy, I am not in a hurry.
If I get it I'll let you know.

N1LNAVVNAV 25th Aug 2015 11:32

Anna 452 cut the Crap

This is the Global website and still shows the vacancy for pilots, They will never stop interviewing, they don't care about giving you a ticket to the pool for 12 months and then have you reaply, what it may happen soon is that they will raise their minimum flight hours and stop the DEC. (at least for wide body)

Qatar Airways Careers - Current Opportunities

Btw, a good friend of mine who assisted interview in May, got an email From HR saying that he was going to be on the Pool for a long time, cause they are only calling TYPE Rated FOs on the B777, Airbus has a different game.

Black Pudding 25th Aug 2015 11:59

I think your contract will say along the lines that Qatar Airways can at anytime change you to any fleet we operate at anytime due to Commercial reasons if needed. It does not happen often, but can.

So think about the following

1 Do you want to work for Qatar Airways

2 Do you need this job

3 Are you prepared to fly any aircraft we operate from 320 to 380s

If your coming here because you want to get a rating only, and not because you want to work here, then maybe you're not the right person for the job.

Again, I will say this

Many here are very happy and cant be bothered to waste time reading half the crap posted here nor comment.

Some here on the 320 fleet are very happy and don't want fleet change believe it or not. So thinking wide body pilots have the best lifestyle etc may not be the case. I am not saying their lifestyle is bad, but what I am saying is there are many on the 320 who are happy and do not want fleet change.

Doha is not Dubai or Abu Dhabi and some actually like it that way. If you want to live in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, then apply there, shut up slagging Doha off and give it a rest. What's more important to you, being happy where you live, happy in work or happy family. If you're in a position to be offered a job at all 3 carriers, lucky you. Do your research well. Must add, I wonder how many threads are on this forum about Qatar Airways, Emirates and that airline that is so wonderful to work for I cant mention its name.

Some here are so glad they don't work for the 2 other Gulf carries and are happy to stay. Some have left for the unnamed airline and are happy, some applied to come back. All depends on the individual.

If you are thinking of coming here just because you want the type rating, and have been lucky enough to have been offered a job, then good for you, but be prepared to fly any of the aircraft we operate just in case they change you after you arrive. It does not happen often, but has happened in the past. You could simply refuse it and argue the case and if that does not work, take it or leave it. Again, must highlight it does not happen often, but your contract will say it may. This is just in case they have to.

As for the office staff. They are just doing their job and there is no untowards, as in dangling a carrot just to get you here. They will e-mail you and tell you the fleet they are genuinely assigning you. They will not dangle a carrot just to get you here.

Go to work, do your job, smile, be stable at 1000 feet, go home "It couldn't be simpler" dot.com

One last thing to remember. This forum is read daily by our company

Good luck to all.

Regards BB

oneworld787 25th Aug 2015 13:24

A wonderful post BB!

Leemankin 25th Aug 2015 13:47

Black pudding,
Good point and advice well taken....any other takers on the issue? Everyone applying for QR I guess would be happy to hear some other comments.
I believe, we need to hear the pros and cons, to as many Pilots as we can, some wouldn't probably mind giving a few minutes of their time. Again appreciate each and every comment, good or bad.
Southpole,
Thanks for the info, and I would say, it's really good you have a lot of patience....I just hope I'll have the same...happy flying though.

Anna452 25th Aug 2015 14:48

N1LNAVVNAV i didnt post about pilots. This link i posted above, they have written the job grades for each position. While in the original Qatar career site, they havnt written the grades. I thought thats pretty interesting to take a look at, for regardless position.

WrldWide 25th Aug 2015 15:14

BP,
Spot on.
Do the work, get paid. I like the job, mostly.

Works for me and my family, doesn't work for some others and thier families. Such are the times we live in.

Bottom line is, go into whatever job you take in whatever part of this globe with your eyes open, wide.

... And not based primarily on what you read on Internet forums FFS.

anilrawat 25th Aug 2015 15:43

Leemankin if you don't mind me asking what aircraft you flying at present…and what fleet you applied for thanks…..

Any non type rated skippers got call for A320 position recently who interviewed in Feb 2015.. just curious to know as I applied for the same and since then in holding pool….

Stone_cold 25th Aug 2015 17:25

Until you don't need an exit permit to be "allowed " to leave the place ...you are a slave ! Nothing more ,nothing less...they just throw more Riyals at you to feel good . Conditions only improve when they can't find enough Guys to fill the seats . The country is sh*t and due to the World cup finally are pretending to address human right issues .Who knows what you will get when the midget cleanses the Flight ops management again . How many times have the management been "reassigned " . How recent was the last cleansing?

Amazing how the hopefuls just suck it up when someone posts a positive spin , do you all think that so many negative posts are BS ? Some are happy , some are trapped for various reasons ...some just don' t have options . But there is good and bad ...buyer beware !
So yes , things may have improved , but in QR you are just one management change away from whats under the glitter .

WrldWide 25th Aug 2015 18:51

Stonecold,
If you honestly think pilot labour is more "valued" and uhm, "appreciated" in other parts of the world, I have some "investments" you may be interested in.

Stone_cold 25th Aug 2015 20:16

But in other parts of the world , everyone ...including pilot's have legal recourse and cannot be held in a country except for legal , read court , action , not because your company's immigration department can revoke your freedom ticket at will , but pay your QR500 and assume that you can leave anytime ...just a click away .

BTW , I never said anything about being appreciated or valued !

You didn't answer , how often do they fire the management ? If the management have no job security , what does that say for the troops .

As for the country , how many Mall fires ? How many kids died in Villagio where the owner was found responsible , yet is still free , for example ??

Flytdeck 25th Aug 2015 23:46

Other parts of the world, but not all. As pilots we are exposed to the national laws where the accident occurs. You may have an issue if you have an accident in Doha just as like any other carrier.

Shouldn't get sucked into this but the reference to the Villagio disaster is just sickening as related to this thread and it is depressing just remembering that day. It has no direct relevance to working here and as a direct result of this terrible event there have been major improvements in facility standards and checking. This is NOT a western court system here. This is NOT a western country. Or would you like to discuss the American justice system, the OJ Simpson trial perhaps, or maybe the case of former President Nixon?

Scroll up, read Black Pudding's excellent post, make up your own mind.
