Aiza: Most overseas contracts that provide company accommodation will give the option to claim the Accommodation Allowance in lieu. You then go private. The allowance will often fall short of the going rate and you would have to dig into your own pocket to make up the difference. Middle East is no different.

I am not in current employment though and apologies if this info is not up to date.

Probably not. They make you jump through a number of hoops to make sure the money is spent in Abu Dhabi. These measures may include making you present some or all of the following, Tawtheeq, Etisalat/Du Bill, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company Bill, Property Deed, Mortgage Statement and/or a letter from the landlord.

I was employed from Dubai (VISA) but worked and lived in Abu Dhabi... Yes it can be done but getting driving permits, VISA medical (renewal was allowed in a different Emirate, but costed more and different / additional tests done), ID card etc needed to be done in the Emirate where your visa is issued.

Renting in another Emirate was the easy part
