EK recruiting realised that all was not well in the Qantas Pilot promotional path (guys lost 5-10 years in their promotional progression by the introduction of Jetstar) and so attempted to attract QF pilots by the lure of a fast Command, and allowing them to work for Emirates under a Leave of Absence from Qantas.

They had 3 1/2 years LOA and at the end of that time had to make the choice of returning to Qf or resigning and staying at EK. The Managers believed after working for EK and getting a Widebody Command none would return to QF. When the 3 1/2 years came up, EK was in dire straights holding on to pilots as well as recruiting them, so deleted the requirement for QF guys to quit the mothership.

The rest is history as all here know. Conditions at EK became such that those with a lifeline (QF & Thomas Cook Pilots to name but 2) returned home.

The visas will be used to fill the Dash 8 jobs which can't be filled in Aust. There's a reason for that. Try living in Sydney on what those companies are paying pilots......
