PIC time
Hello ladies and gentlemen, I would like to know if first officers joining ek,qr, fd and the unmentionable without any prior command experience except pic time from flight school have any trouble getting upgraded because of some hidden PIC requirements.

I can only speak for EK, where a lot of F/Os have no previous command time and still pass the upgrade with no problems. The only requirements are seniority, minimum of three years in the company and, for the 380, 2,500 hrs on type. EK is so short of Captains on th e big bus I can see the 2,500 requirement changing before long. Do bear in mind that there is no recogniseable employment law here so the requirements can change on a whim.

Big Georgie actually EK has had huge problems recently with upgrades. Both with the 380 FOs and 777 skippers that can't past the mustard on the Big Bus. Unprecedented levels of failures that has set off alarm bells on the 3rd floor of Flt Ops and at the GCAA.

I've only heard of 2 failures in total for those transferring direct from left seat B777 to A380. Failure rate amongst F/O's only slightly above the norm. The failure rate for upgrades has historically been higher on the Airbus fleet than those on the Boeing during the actual course but the reverse being true at interview stage. Even so, not what I would call a 'huge' problem but without the actual data in front of me, it would be unwise to fight that statement. From my perspective that is.

PICUS Time
Just out of interest, since Qr is recruiting pilots with Frozen ATPL (CPL with ATPL subjects), how do they intend some of these guys to get the required PIC time? Do they perhaps make them log PICUS time, do any of the Big 3 have such a program in their training Dept? Or will these guys or gals remain in the right seat indefinitely???
