New Doha airport is quite impressive, less so ATC set up with same controller for Tower, Ground and Delivery at 4am!

EK by mid 2020's if ready, can't think of one project finished on time . Current fleet plan now is 250 by 2020 (DXB) then there seems to be a gap between 2020 and the move to DWC 2025+

Sheikh Ahmed was asked about this a long time ago. He just smiled and said all he could say was that all Emirates flights would always be at one airport in the future. I don't think he was talking about this interim cargo thing we do out of DWC now.

Where did this mid 2020's idea come from? Did I miss a memo? That's totally possible, given the amount of information thrown at us from all directions but it sounds like speculation to me.

My own speculation is that we'll always stay at DXB. How many gajillions did they spend on EGHQ just for us? You think they're going to throw that whole cost away and do another one in Jebel Ali? I don't. I think everyone else will go there but our current airport will just be ours.

To make it work in either case they're going to need a direct rail line, that's for sure.

With passenger traffic expected to reach almost 100 million at Dubai International by the end of 2020, the further development of DWC will be a vital step towards providing the necessary facilities to accommodate passenger and cargo growth in the decades ahead and pave the way for Emirates to relocate their intercontinental hub operations to DWC by the mid-2020s.

Bilateral Air Agreements generally would not allow EK to operate from one hub, DXB, and the others from another hub, DWC. (It would be a bit like only BA operating from Heathrow, and the others from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton etc.) Too much competitive advantage due to proximity to the city & other factors.

Minor detail. Where is Dubai Government going to get the money from to do this?

I love the way Paul Griffiths spun this on the radio this morning. Big investment blah blah blah. The reality is its a delay with only 1 new runway by 2019 instead of 2, phase 1 in the early 2020's and no mention of when phase 2 or the other 3 runways (originally 2 due by 2020 the other 2 by 2025) will be built.

My personal forecast is that FlyDubai will get sent to DWC maybe as early as next year, the remaining non EK carriers will be banished to Terminal 2. EK take terminal 1, 3 & 4. Then the other carriers get sent to DWC in 2019/20 and EK take over DXB completely.

Personally, I doubt EK will ever move from DXB because the 'competition' wont accept having EK any closer to the border than it is now.

I was told some time ago that the UAE government could smother DWC with military airspace, if it became a threat..........

Iver posts on every forum on PPRune as if he works for every airline in every region of the world. Not bad for a guy with a PPL. Is that sarcastic enough for you? Oh no wait it isn't sarcasm if it's true.

vfenext,

You know NOTHING about me and my background. Last time I checked this was a rumour and opinion board and you are not the gatekeeper. I fly for a well-known Irish LCC now and I have friends flying worldwide - including many flying for the big 3 ME carriers and a few flying for Asian carriers - and most share their opinions with me quite frequently. I do seek out other opinions and I am naturally curious about other airlines since my carrier is suboptimal and I don't really care what you or others think. You can choose to ignore everything I post. Please do.

Now, back to DWC expansion....

Iver makes a good point, i.e. have Dubai Inc. paid off any of the massive debt that practically bankrupted the emirate of Dubai, it being a 'sovereign debt' so large that it needed a massive loss-of-face saving handout from the big brother emirate down the road, i.e. Dubai was so exposed that it couldn't even find the money to cover an interest payment on the capital sum of just some of their debt... and therein will those 'in the know' pray tell how much of Dubai's total debt - since that debacle - has since been repaid ?
