the training department is a joke, I flew with ex ryan guys to africa and they have never been there, during their training they have only been to MUC, VIE and all the other high value destinations, so basically I had to train them and didn't get paid for it.

was taken off a MXP flight and sent to CMN, the trainer had CMN and wanted my MXP, I guess there is more training value in a MXP.

Nothing to do, so had a look at the training flights in Oct on the Boeing.

Of around 450 training flights 9 were in Africa (7XX).

But not deep-dark Africa...MRU, JNB, DUR, CPT, MLA.

Asked a newbee about his first trips. Not bad, VIE and GVA. Asked him if there has a airport-specific training. Nope, just the usual riding on sops, OMA and bulletins, the trainer having a lot to do alone in those cities …..

The state of some new FOs is deplorable. Mind you, only about 10%, but that’s enough. I am tired to bring them up to speed, I expect training to cope with that. But how can you do it when you fly around in the best airspaces and airports, during decent duty hours? As has been said, logically training should also happen in Sanaa, Adis, Khartoum, Bangalore, Cochin etc, at the odd hours with a disrupted sleep pattern for the last 10 days, during Monsoon. You could take all the legs, but it still leaves you with a poor guy who does not undestand the local slang he has never heard before and is still so preoccupied and intimidated to find the right sop-words, that he has no capacity left to behave like an airman.

I hear the trainers moaning that they bear all the brunt and that they need such and such and blah, blah. But if the result of training is some inadequately trained FOs and unfair rosters for the normal skippers, then the department and its staff is not up to speed and the situation will only get worse. Emiratisation seems to hit the training department hard …..

But what botheres me even more, is the general morale of elder FOs. At least one in four openly regrets having joined EK. The reasons are no longer manyfold, they are almost all due to the money. Schools are overstretching the allocation by thousands and if accomodation poses the slightest problem, with the situation as of today, the department knows that opting out is no longer an option, with the disparity of allocation and general rent prices, and they behave accordingly, meaning they don’t give a …. ! A lot of FOs are very quiet, almost subdued and lethargic, becoming a similar threat as some newbees, but who can blame them!
Train them adequately, pay them so they no longer lose money below the line and make the rosters fair again. Sounds easy because it sounds logical. Then again I have to remind me where I am ……

MM should be ashamed that his soldiers are stealing the nice flights for their personal use and the training is suffering, he is the boss after all and should take responsibility.

The training pay should be enough for them.
