Increased EK attrition

Probably very true Iver. However, doesn't change the fact for the attrition. And with a high turnover rate there are, and will be inherent problems with regards to safety; crm, sop's, corporate memory, experience etc. If you have the opportunity to view EK's weekly safety reports (don't know if you're EK), you might notice that many of the filed reports are due to a lack of experience both in the field of EK operations and overall experience, which all have had at some time in their past. So far the safety margin of inexperience hasn't been "nicked" yet, but how close is any operation with a high turnover rate. Only time will tell. Guess they're willing to gamble.

I couldn't wait for command when I joined EK. Lots of movement and I could hear it coming.
After EVERY captain I flew with was tired, and complaining of their rosters I eventually decided on looking elsewhere.
i flew a night turn with a 15yr captain and he showed me his roster on second bottom bid. Yep, a disaster. Its sobering, but at EK you will never escape it.

Well, maybe true but a generalization for all? With 5 bid groups, is it any wonder his second from bottom was poor! Perhaps an average 5 months would better reflect the overall workload pattern. Add to this fleet type and knowledge of how to bid (yes, even some 15yr Captains don't know how to use the system correctly) and you can see why rosters will vary tremendously.
There is no doubt, however, that guys in the left seat are working harder than those in the right. 92 hours, month after month and it will begin to take its toll, regardless of above factors.

Not sure how many U.S. pilots are flying in the region but it seems like the opportunities are opening up at home with almost everyone starting to hire in 2014. Southwest, Delta, UAL have begun and a few others. Granted, the pay package will take a couple of years to catch up to EK et al, but for those wanting to get back, good news!

Good thread over on APC discussing this and the numbers. Gotta say there are some huge retirements as well as the rule 117 coming up for increased rest requirements, both of which will require quite a number of pilots...

.......which makes me re-iterate what BigGeordie said to Fala - be careful what you wish for. Opportunism will dictate that if there is a substantial attrition rate DECs will be used to keep jets flying.

On a related note...let's give credit where it's due.
The GIG pilot(s) were treated very professionally and the Safety Dept conducted itself as it should without Fleet being overly involved.
The end game was as good as it gets, considering the circumstances .
Wishing the same for our brothers in BNE.

First let me say since the company stole our bonus in May there has been about an average of 12 pilots resign a month.
Our friend in HR let on at a party that there are about 75 pilots with their retirement papers in so their 3 month window is counting. That is in addition to the pilots that have left since the theft.
According to our friend the HR dept is mildly concerned about the experience loss but they can fill the slots although not with the kind of pilots they really want or need.
We can only hope that with the loss maybe things will improve slightly. I know we won't get what we deserve or what AF, LH, DL, AA and UAL receive but maybe we can get back our bidding system and they will not be so quick to steal our bonus next year. A long shot I know.
