PIA in the (well-sort-of) grass

Incident: PIA A313 at Karachi on Jun 16th 2013, runway excursion on takeoff

Perhaps a couple of hours refresher on a Cessna 310 are in order?

Pakistan Inshall'ah Airways

But joking aside - what DO you do if there's a differential between how quickly each engine spools up, which is how this incident happened?

every engine/aircraft combo has an rpm threshold above which eng spool-up must be within specific parameters, and symmetrical...if they dont match, don't release the brakes...most generally it's around 50%N1, but for sure varies from type to type...

Thanks. I'm not a pilot (as if you hadn't guessed!) but my stepdad was, for BEA, and he was telling me how many years ago he was taking off at night from somewhere in Scandinavia where the runway jutted out into the sea and it turned out not to have been de-iced properly.

He found this out the hard way when the 2 engines on 1 side spooled up faster than the other and they could neither brake or steer thanks to the ice so ended up veering towards the sea JUST before building up enough speed for the rudder to start working and get them back on the centre line!

I've never heard of any spool-up parameters beyond they match after spool up or they don't. What are the parameters on ours?

Since we rarely spool up while holding the brakes (rolling take-offs), it's a bit late to not release the brakes if they don't match up. That's why there's a spool-up and pause prior to application of TO thrust.
