Are Dubai expats really like this?!

BBC News - An awkward brush with the Dubai expat vodka set

Can't see this journalist getting invited out by these people a second time

I read this the other day and it made me smile...yes, there ARE expats who are exactly like this, but what you have to remember is that there are equally offensive, unpleasant people everywhere...I've seen a lifetime's worth of them in London.

The percentage is probably a little higher out here but don't be mistaken, most expats over here are perfectly normal people, they're just a bit warmer!

You will finds these types living empty lives in constant pursuit of status in all expat communities. They are usually women with nothing else to do all day other than spending their husband's money. Perhaps it's simply boredom that causes them to become shallow and obnoxious.

I too read this a few says ago and it made me laugh.
Yes Dubai has its fair share of this sort of expat.
They are all over the world but here they can ascend to new levels!
Welcome to the new world

Yes, they are.

The next morning they cry their eyes out, about how they are being wronged, not getting their dues and how they deserve to be better.

I shall take cover for incoming now.

I have seen these types more often than not in DXB. Recently I had an EK stew all up my arse to take her to Hakkasan, where the bottle service starts at $12k and tops out at $500k! It really does blow me away.

Al Dubai Bin Al Bollacks

Yup, completely agree with the BBC here.

Let me put it this way, Dubai in the early 2000's wasn't like this at all. Ask anyone who's lived long enough in the U.A.E and they'd tell you. It had a subtle sense of class and finesse and when visited Dubai, you took back nice memories.

Not crass and decadence as it is now, all thanks to black and illegitimate money that couldn't be parked anywhere else except the U.A.E.

today, at almost all bars there's a fight that breaks out; and mucks up the whole place. Didnt happen in when i was there though.

I don't blame the shallow minded cretins who fall into this life style, they are just easily led and mindless. I blame the hypocritical greedy regime that encourages it to happen.

Err...to suggest that only 10% in DXB are shallow and banal is probably a bit light on the numbers. I'd say the ratio is more the other way around with about 90% sheer oxygen thieves.

I doubt the vast majority of the hosties will go home after several years with much more than a nice shoe collection, a debt, and a couple of STD's.

Having sampled the wares in a vast number of large cities I think it's safe to say that Dubai is the Ground Zero of vacuous, soulless, meaningless crap culture and selfish greed.

Enjoyed the article, nailed it dead-on.

nolimitholdem your spot on

nolimitholdem, i dont think there's been anyone who's been as clear and sound in their assessment of Dubai and had the guts to say it loud and clear.

trusting Dubai IT sleuths are almost on every site recording 'hater' IP addresses so that they question them on arrival(it has happened several times before, some have even gone to jail for commenting on suggestions of democracy in Dubai).

There is no freedom in dubai, yet they are no rules, and that is what gets the mafia to park their illegal money in and lead a legit life.

Hats off to you mate!.

KPBsen...

Make no mistake there is the disgusting male version of the expat too....it takes about 20 seconds at Long's to spot the species...balding, potty, red-nosed, mid-fifties sweatily pawing at some young asians arse....He left his wife year's ago for the maid and she ran off with his savings so he is left in the desert to live pay cheque to pay cheque at the various watering holes living under delusions of grandeur that he is still remotely appealing (other than his wallet).

at least Longs has some character! As opposed to the 60 AED/drink venues (like the one in the article) where everyone is desperate to appear important.

Sad, but true. Being cabin crew living surrounded by other cabin crew, I barely leave my apartment. I fear having to see their ridiculous behavior and fake happy lives. But there are many pilots also.

No Limit...

Hmm if you think that 'most' of the CC in Dubai will only leave with lots of shoes and no money (as well as the rest you describe) then I think you clearly hang around with the wrong people.

I know many many crew who have left having purchased properties, attained qualifications, put their siblings through school and/or spent significant amounts of their free time and money helping those less fortunate than they. I doubt most of them have been in Long's very often (except for perhaps during Ramadan)

Dare I say it this less than flattering description of yours may apply equally well to some of those of your occupation as well... Asian layovers come to mind....

I avoid most of the Dubai 'clubs' because they are more trouble than they are worth. Full of sleazy guys who think that solely because you are a female out with your friends you must be 'up for it'. Grabbing and touching just because you are there! And then, to top it off, jerk doormen who threaten to throw the WOMAN out when she reacts as naturally most women would when being groped by some skeeze she doesn't know. Much more civilized to have a few bevvies at home or dinner/evening out with friends somewhere else than to waste hours of my life in these sub-par venues that think they are such hot-s--t when really they are pretty much all the same.

Falcon, any guy willing to take me to a place with such ridiculous prices would probably not be getting a call back... geezus... good on you for not buying into this stupid "expensive is better" mentality that sadly many guys think is the way to impress the ladies. When I see guys acting like that it makes me wonder what they are trying to make up for... Of course, nothing wrong with a quality meal/night out but..... 15K for booze??? ffs.... Dubai attitude in a nutshell. Could be cat's piss for all some people care, so long as it looks expensive and makes them look rich...

Falcon - you are dead right but describing a night in Fibbers or, for example, Irish village, doesn't generate so many web site hits/sell so many papers. Not quite sure what the Beeb were trying to do there. Its not exactly a balanced view of Dubai, albeit factually correct as far as it goes.

Sums me up nicely I value value, besides I find having to iron a shirt and finding a decent pair of shorts and then my Berkies about as much preparation as I can stand, money invested offshore makes me feel much better than quaffing Christal and being over charged for a big plate with nuffink on it..innit

Fibbers on a Monday pretty much does the job, all the rest of the "look at me" hobb nobbers can go swing AFAIK
