Gulf Technics, the MRO division of Bahrain's Mumtalakat, could shut down and leave students stranded, Gulf Daily News has reported. The company's website has also been "temporarily suspended".
In April 2010, a BD4.8 million programme was launched with the backing of Tamkeen and the Gulf Aviation Academy to train 350 Bahraini aircraft engineers and technicians. Students signed contracts at the time to be guaranteed employment for at least five years after graduation. Now they have reportedly been told a "restructuring" is being carried out.
"We have found out that the institution has plans to close its doors and will remain open as a shell with no students," a spokesman for the students reportedly said. "It has got desperate now and we can't get the official documented confirmation from anyone but we are getting told everything off the record. We would have all gone public already but there is a confidentiality clause that says if we speak out our contract is void."
The union, which has the backing of 280 students, have sent a letter to more than 700 businesses and governmental institutions in a bid to save the institution. It claims students should have already completed their theoretical work but delays in the programme have meant they had fallen a year behind. The letter also alleges the student accommodation and working environment was not up to standard during the first 18 months of the programme.
"Most of us are too poor to sustain ourselves and so we saw this as an opportunity to make our lives better and get a stable career, but it's all ruined," the letter reportedly states. "We have asked GAA to compensate us."
The programme was part of a Tamkeen agreement with GAA to train 1,200 Bahrainis for the aviation sector. Graduates were planned to operate the newly-built hangar at Bahrain International Airport.

Due to its voluntary liquidation last month, around 22,000 Bahrain Air tickets were made invalid, Gulf Daily News has reported, citing a former senior employee.
The tickets were sold to customers before the airline shut all operations on February 12. Customers were asked to buy tickets on alternative airlines and submit claims to the liquidator for a reimbursement. According to Salah Ahmed Abdulla, former Bahrain Air ground services manager, the customers had still not been compensated.
"Twenty-two thousand tickets were sold and processed before the liquidation and were either never used or partly used, meaning someone didn't use the return ticket," he said. "That money was collected, but resources were not used since they were never honoured. Where is that money?"
Meanwhile, former staff are still waiting for severance packages and 34 have lodged a case in the High Civil Court against the airline for the delays. Abdulla reportedly said another 31 former employees are also planning to do the same.
