Passenger demands flight attendant be off-loaded from Saudi flight.

A Saudi Arabia Airlines flight from Jeddah to the eastern city of Dammam was delayed over a passenger's demand that a stewardess be removed from the aircraft because she wasn't accompanied by a male guardian, Arabian Business has reported, citing Okaz newspaper.

Flight 1108 was delayed when a stewardess began to demonstrate flight safety procedures, and was interrupted by a passenger who asked her "why are you on the plane without a guardian". The passenger then proceeded to demand the plane not take off until all women unaccompanied by male guardians be removed from the aircraft.

The captain called security who then forcefully removed the objecting passenger and his son and started an investigation. The incident caused the flight to be delayed two hours.

Every woman in Saudi Arabia must have a male guardian accompanying her when travelling, usually a husband or father, sometimes a son. Women in the kingdom need the consent of a male guardian to work, travel abroad, marry or to open a bank account.

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, who has tried to accelerate the pace of reform in the kingdom, announced in 2011 that women would be able to vote and run in municipal elections starting in 2015. Last month, the monarch appointed 30 women to the 150-member Shoura Council which was previously an all male body that advises the government on legislation.

Guardian could be in Jump Seat

Perhaps as Sky Marshal..... specialising in morals not hijacking.....

I must admit I was surprised at the allowance of local female cabin crew.

I know it was proposed, but suspected that it would never happen.

What happens when they go tech and have to night stop......

I hope that the entire fiasco has not put the clampers on the allocation of local cabin crew.

Interesting...

In essence the Saudi Male is saying that he has a complete lack of trust in his fellow citizens...with a foreign female.

Presumably the morals of the society he lives him would insure no harm....be perpetrated by his fellow pious colleagues?

Purely a question ... and nowhere near an opinion...after all...that's not allowed...

When I lived there (with wife & 4 daughters), it was a crapshoot when one of them arrived unaccompanied in Jeddah...about a quarter of the time, they would be put into female holding (bint tank), until a male showed up to escort them home. (pita) Sam

Couldn't she have said that the flight crew are her guardians, which in essence they are on any flight?

As an aircraft captain, I consider myself to be the daddy of any unaccompanied female passengers or crew by default. So no problem on Saudi flights.

Who's your daddy?

I don't know what you're all so upset about. This is just Sharia. Coming to your country soon by the way.

In fact, the passenger first demanded to give him another seat, more convenient to pray.
Then he went on demanding to deplane all females (cabin crew and passengers) from the plane.
The last one was to remove all non-muslim foreigners (the captain was one of them )
He was absolutely calm and confident: This country is governed by Sharia law and you have to comply... He even never raised his voice.
Almost 300 PAX wasted 1h 32min each...
Nothing to do with safety demonstration.

Hmmm and I suppose only Muslim, Saudi males are involved in any way in working for, performing tasks for or helping him in any capacity, such as driver, maid, guy packing his groceries at C4 or cooking his meals...

Didn't think so....

Well they could have just pretended they thought he wanted all the crew off, deplaned with the other pax to another aircraft and left him to it

As for guardians, I would have thought the Capt would have been the logical one, in that situation. Few around I wouldn't mind being in charge of me, ooh err... Okay jokes jokes, this forum is too boring lately....

I was also thinking to become a guardian, but met unexpected objections from my second half
