EY partnerships?

EY has recently forged a close partnership with AirBerlin as well as an increased investment in the German carrier. EY has also decided to invest in other airlines and other financial organizations...but why? Diversifications is good but why not concentrate on the growth of the airline. Is this a sign of desperation to make money or maybe a growth strategy via mergers, in order to catch up to EK?
Thoughts?
