EK346 8 Sep return to DXB - What happened?
Hello,
Anyone with inside info about what happened to EK346 Dubai - Kuala Lumpur on 8th September?
Short version of non-aviation friend who was on board:
After takeoff a series of loud bangs where heard and the aircraft lost altitude and banked. Passengers reported seeing sparkds/flames from engine. First they were told by the Captain in a "nervous shaky voice" they would land at Qatar, but after half hour holding they where told they had "engine and control problems" and would return to Dubai. They where briefed for a full emergency landing. They were told there would be fuel jettisoning and flames may be seen. (don't ask me..)
It appears to have been a firm landing, as the overhead lockers opened "on impact". Panick broke out and passengers where trying to climb over each other to reach an emergency exit. The crew managed to prevent people from opening doors. After 20 minutes of standing without electrics or aircon (I suppose full shutdown in evacuation checklist?) they were towed to stand and bussed to a seperate area of the airfield were councelling was available.
They were promised hotels and connecting flights.
He is now in discussion with Emirates about a missed connection and they are basically denying anything happened and refusing to reimburse him. As he took a number of pictures of the event they said they would come after him if he would publicise these pics.
Anyone now what actually happened and if this kind of hush-up is common?

Next time you see your friend, ask him what happened when he woke up. It's all a pile of b*****t .
Something with this magnitude cannot be hidden from the public. Why on earth are they going to enter a holding pattern for 30 minutes in Qatar, which the plane should be nowhere near at, given that the routing is DXB - KUL, and after pointlessly holding for 30 minutes, return to DXB where they announce full emergency, crash land more or less, and eventually expect no one to notice.
If something like this were to happen, the plane would be in no condition to fly. You do realize no one can shut so many people up. Passengers, crew, ATC, people involved in the maintenance of the aircraft, people working within flight ops.. It's all a bunch of lies, the purpose of which is to badmouth EK.

I have no interest in badmouthing anyone, no need to get defensive. I'm just trying to find out what actually happened, as my mate is a non aviation person and this is just his version as he experienced it.
Whatever he heard/misheard the basics are there. takoff-boom-chaos-heavy landing back in dxb. so whats the story?
I've seen the pictures and I can assure you im not winding anyone up.

High altitude early morning birdstrike.
Fuel jettisoned.
A few fuse plugs melted after landing. (Speculation: high speed due flap damage?)
The plane is back in the air. No hush up, just no big sensationalist media hype. Another day in aviation.
Nice job by the crew
