Illegal items in Dubai

Im looking through various websites trying to find out the do's and don't for the UAE.

I will be moving there soon with my wife and I am trying to ensure we do not bring anything we cannot.

Could anyone inform me of any gottchas, like what type (apart from porn) of DVDs are not allowed etc

I know drugs are a no no & things against Islam but is there anything else people can think of which can land anyone in trouble.

Cheers

Cordless phones.

But don't worry, unless the phones base-stations have a british wire connection, they are a bugger to re-wire anyway, although you can easily get adaptors.

It's more the "transmitter" part they are controlling, even though they are the same as you get back home. The same spectrum is set aside for such domestic devices.

Why poker chips?
The chips do not constitute gambling only a game, is it not only gambling if the chips hold a monetary value?

Extra marital sex is illegal in Dubai, does make me wonder what all those somewhat underdressed girls in the international hotel bars are there for. If it looks like a hooker, acts like a hooker, smells like a hooker, anywhere else in the world it would be, but obviously not so in Dubai.

The poker chips dear fellow, are because you may actually gamble for real with them
You can get packs of cards though on board your EK joining flight

Walkie-talkies not permitted, although again, you can buy them here!

Consuming alcohol, can be illegal

selling it and buying it is legal.

re the blue pills, again buying, using is legal, importing is illegal. and the shop assistant trying to sell you the family pack.......did not know they were in the Airport Duty free.

every petrol station has a vast display of rubber goods, but in most cases use is illegal.

cordless phones, (did not know that), are available in every supermarket.

poker chips (aka match sticks) are freely available too.

fluffy handcuffs are in Dragon Mart too, as are neck massage machines.

holding hands is illegal, except between man.

that's all folks.

UAE (and other GCC countries) apply strict Shariah law, so anything that is in contradiction can be interpreted as an offense and means a jail sentence.

You probably get away with most things but if someone decides to throw the book at you - you're as good as toast.

After almost 15 years I have experienced that the most sever things are personal insults (e.g. finger or FU) and insulting the local religion (will not even go there).

no no no. Those are teachers from iran or russia. They're there to provide private tutoring.

in other parts of the world, for instance in vietnam, "they" are investment bankers who craftily steal your money… (and handfone, dignity, etc)...

Ah, thanks, I did wonder. Obviously teaching there is not well-paid, they don't seem to earn enough to buy much in the way of clothing or their own drinks. I wonder how they afford the airfare to get there. Next time I'm over there I shall have to buy a couple of them a drink and see if I can get some tutoring in international affairs.

Thumbs up the middle finger is the one

When I last used the E Gate, guess which finger the scanner requested.

I did not know what to do....but being a mans man I raised it in silent salute.

As to the EFL teachers in Dubai, they are highly professional in their teaching, I wailed my Greek oral test, and was punished accordingly.

Now the EU has expanded so much, they come to UK to improve their inter personnel (Spell check LOL ),skills, before returning to the big wide world.

Posessing alcohol without either having a liquor licence, or with a tourist-visa in your passport can land you in jail.

But cross the border to RAK, and have a beer

There is no licence required in RAK, so if I had a beer in RAK, then was DRIVEN to Dubai, could I be arrested for consuming a beer.

As I park the aircraft, at the FBO, I am then encouraged to visit the inbound duty free to buy beer, will i then be arrested as I walk out of the door.

Also as I step off the EK aircraft, then be arrested in the terminal for having had a beer.

what to do...
