For Bowing

Hi Bowing,

Omanair have just hired 5 expat Captains on ATR42 as no locals wanted to go on the prop. They even had a few expats with experience on type, ready for upgrade but preferred the direct entry Captain option.

Omanair is constantly hiring only locals. Omani young guys in droves heading off to Philipines with $38,000 in their pockets and coming back 11 months later with CPLs ready to be hired. Estimate is there are around 300 of these currently in line to be hired and lots more to come. Also around 80-100 experienced Omani pilots abroad that are gradually coming in direct left seat.

So to answer your question about hiring expats as you can see they don't need to. Currently most expats are on the move and around two leaving every month. The roster is one of the worst if not the worst in the industry with mega mixes of night and day flights that tire even the fittest and healthiest of pilots. Even some locals are thinking of leaving.

Omanair have no reason to be worried as they have endless supply of locals. Let's face it in the end it is their airline and should be operated by their own people.

The plan is that by end of 2011 all expat FOs out, replaced by locals and expat Captains by 2014. They may bring in some contract guys for 6 months just to help as they finish their expansion. The company will end up with 30 aircraft and not more.

So if I were you I'd look elsewhere as the market right now is offering some great opportunities.

For those of you at Oman air: How much is Captain's pay? Does it vary with the type that you are on? Do they provide any sort of accomodation allowance? What is Muscat like? And finally what is your schedule like on the ATR?
Thanks for sharing...

Now the truth:
Oman Air has hire a total of 7 "expat" captains and 1 copilot "expat" for the ATR-42. Four current ATR "expat" crews upgrading into the Ebraer.

Good luck Scube!
I don't think there are many expat pilots that still believe in fairy tales.
Lots of more interesting jobs out there with better rosters and better terms and conditions.
Hasta la vista!

To all EXPATS joining or looking to join WY remember the day they get a local to replace you doesn't matter how senior u may be you will be shown the door overnight. Ask the people who work there especially the locals it's not rocket science.

Very true, I'll tell you why...

When you first join Omanair you are offered a two year contract where it states that if you decide to leave before contract ends and/or company decide they don't need you anymore 3 months notice have to be given.

Now comes the interesting part:

After your two years are up your contract can be renewed upon MUTUAL agreement. Pilots submit paperwork and get visa renewed for another two years BUT NO CONTRACT is signed. If for some reason a pilot then resigns Omanair expect him/her to give three months notice. However, the pilot NEVER signed a new contract. So if Omanair have to get rid of you they can do so with 24hrs notice!

So for all those who are thinking of joining do your homework CAREFULLY BEFORE joining. Then come just with a suitcase so if things don't work out they way they promised you can go easily...

Oman is a very quiet country and if you like trekking, camping, SCUBA diving it is very pleasant. If you can cope with the VERY disruptive roster then maybe it is the place for you.

contracts

Omanair can have odd ways of doing things but they still have to obey the law of the country.
Oman Labour Law
Article 36:

If the contract is for a limited period and the parties continue to execute it after the expiry of its period, the contract will be deemed to have been renewed with the same terms and conditions for an unlimited period.

Article 37:

If the contract is for an unlimited period, any party may choose to terminate it by giving the other party a thirty day written notice of termination in case of employees who receive their salaries monthly, and fifteen days for other employees unless it is agreed in the contract for a longer period.

If the contract is terminated without such period being observed, the party who terminates the contract will be obliged to pay to the other party a compensation equal to the gross salary of the notice period or the remaining part thereof.

Article 38:

Notice of termination of the contract, issued by the employer to the employee, when the latter is on leave or public holiday, will not be valid except from the date following the end of either the leave or the public holiday.

Article 39:

If the employment relationship is terminated, the employer, shall, in respect of the employees who do not benefit from the rules of the Social Insurance Law, pay to the employee an end of service gratuity equal to the salary of fifteen days for each year of service for the first three years and a one month salary for each year for the following years and the employee will be entitled to gratuity for the fractions of the year in respect of the period he spent in service and the last basic salary shall be the basis of calculating the gratuity. The duration of continuous service which began before the commencement of this law shall be counted within the period of service which will be considered for determining the payable gratuity period.

Article 40:

The employer may dismiss the employee without notice and without paying end of service gratuity in any of the following cases:-

If the employee assumes a false identity or resorts to forgery to obtain the employment.

If the employee commits a mistake which results in grave material loss to the employer, provided that the latter reports the incident to the concerned Directorate within three days from the date of his knowledge of such incident.

If the employee does not abide by the instructions which must be followed for the safety of the employees and the place of work despite being warned in writing, provided that such instructions are made in writing and displayed in a conspicuous place.

If the employee is absent from his work without reasonable justification for more than ten days in one year or more than seven consecutive days, provided that the employer gives the employee a written warning after being absent for five days in the first instance.

If the employee discloses the secrets of the establishment in which he works.

If the employee is finally convicted of a crime or misdemeanour involving breach of honour or trust or a misdemeanour committed in the place of work or while the work is being performed.

If during the working hours the employee is found drunk or intoxicated by a narcotic substance or a mind stimulant. If the employee assaults the employer or the manager in charge or gravely assaults any of his superiors during the work or because of the work or if he beats one of his fellow employees in the place of work and such beating results in illness or discontinuation of work for a period which exceeds ten days.

If the employee gravely breaches his obligations to perform the work agreed upon in his contract of employment.

They know pretty well they cannot operate just with omanis as they would be operating 10months/year only during the day. The new guys are disaster and who knows if they will ever make it onto the planes.
But yes, the fact they may attempt to get rid of all expats is worrying and definately putting people into undesirable situation of uncertain future.
