Turkish receives first of 12 B777-300ER's

Quote:
The rapidly expanding Turkish Airlines, or THY, received the first of a dozen Boeing 777-300 ERs during a ceremony at Boeing’s Everett, Washington, delivery center on Wednesday.

“Today we are getting the first of the dozen and next week we’ll get another one,” said THY Chairman Hamdi Topçu, speaking to journalists at a press conference before the event. “By the end of December we will have three more in our fleet. The rest will be in our hands by August 2011.”

As Turkish and foreign journalists witnessed the event, it was evident that THY, the sixth most profitable airline in the world in 2009, is seen as one of the “lifesavers” for the U.S. aerospace giant due to its orders submitted during the worst days of the global recession.

The dozen 777s were purchased at a lower price than the list price of $210 million per jet thanks to canceled orders by other airline companies that were having a tough time due to the recession. Topçu declined to reveal the purchase price but said it was “a price which was, in essence, a prize of the crisis.”

The new wide-body jets will help THY expand its operations further, as direct flights to Washington, D.C., and Atlanta start in November while new lines to Sao Paolo, Ho Chi Minh City and Los Angeles are also in the pipeline. Turkey’s flagship carrier will further “increase the frequency” of flights to the Far East, according to Topçu.

Speaking at the ceremony, Marlin Dailey, a Boeing vice president, said the 777-300 ER was a perfect choice for THY as the model is nearly one-fifth lighter than its nearest competitor, providing fuel savings of 2 percent and reducing CO2 emissions by 22 percent.

Fuel efficiency is of key importance for THY, as the airline reported a 64 percent annual rise in fuel costs in the first half of the year to $665 million. Mainly due to soaring fuel prices, THY posted a net profit of $105 million in the second quarter, below analyst forecasts.

With the new jets, THY will also offer “comfort class,” which falls somewhere between first class and economy.

Last year, THY posted a net profit of $370 million, ranking sixth behind Emirates, Air China, Cathay Pacific, Gol Linhas Aeras and Ryanair in overall profitability.
