Etisalat iphone4

A question to anyone who has bought the iphone4 recently offered on contract by Etisalat.
Have you been able to download applications traditionally blocked by Etisalat - in particular skype - and does it work?
Just wondering if they have managed to get their grubby little paws on the phones destined for the local market and thus turned, what on the outset looks like a good deal, into a turkey.
Thanks

Finally got one the other day after weeks of trying!
Deliveries are about 20 units per shop every couple of days, usually late at night. They wont take preorders or even call you to let you know when they're in.
Apple istyle stores will take orders, but for Etisalat only plan 1 available.

In terms of what has happened to them locally, only app not to be included in phone is the face to face app, a real shame.

Skype app downloaded and works a treat, but only on wifi at home, not on the 3g roaming.

Really nice phone.

Samsung Galaxy S

Go for Samsung Galaxy S . 10 times better than IPHONE and with a better deal with etisalat regarding the data plan.

Iphone 4 is a question of Status only. If u r smart ,choose the best phone with an open plataform.

Enjoy the ride!

Got an iPhone4, but bought it at the full price from one of the bigger chains at MOE. The hefty price tag ensures that the phone is an European version that is fully unlocked, ie you get all the features including facetime.

If you buy a phone through Etisalat or Du, there will be a few features that will not be working.......
If you look on FaceTime on iPhone 4 : du and Etisalat, there is a post regarding the pros and cons of the etisalat and du phones.

Basically, according to this site, the TRA got involved and made a deal with Apple(same nonsense as the Blackberry fiasco), that phones to be supplied to these two orgs would have things like facetime removed.....it works on the model number on your phone (all phones with AE or LL in the model number), and if you update your carrier settings.

All the phones come with version 4.0.2 software, if you upgrade to 4.1 (carrier settings update), and have a phone from etisalat or du, then you will lose facetime. It affects all phones with either AE or LL in the model number. You can find the model number under Settings, About, then scroll down to see the model number.
If you have a phone from Etisalat or Du and have the AE or LL in the model number, don't upgrade to 4.1 . Keep it working on 4.0.2........if you have already upgraded, then you will probably not have facetime working.

As for skype, I downloaded it from the UAE iTunes store as a free app, works absolutely fine...go figure.....

one quick question about iPhones and etisalat.
When i was in UAE using Etisalat pre paid sim on my iPhone 3G and 3GS, it automatically deducts my prepaid credit due to internet, even though I was not using internet at all. Contacted Etisalat and after a long hassle, finally got to know that internet is already activated and only way to stop loosing credit is to buy an internet/data plan from etisalat.
Is it still happening with Iphone4, as am planning to gift one to my dad who resides in UAE and using etisalat.
Thanks,
CBAFIL

Yes, it does......and the bill is quite hefty if you do not buy a data package....AED20 per Mb!!!!

To switch off all your data usage, go to Settings: Wi-Fi - switch off
Then settings: General - make sure your cellular data is turned off, location services turned off, etc. The cellular data ON is what kills your account!!
Under network, make sure everything is turned off.
Under settings, make sure your mail account is signed out, your Store is turned off, Nike +iPod off.

And now you have a regular phone you can buy for a few DHS at just about anywhere......

If you want the data package from Eatyoursalad, it costs AED145 for 1Gb.

If you buy the phone from Eti or Du, you will get the data, voice package thrown in, but then the phone is locked to those SP's until it dies one day

Skype is blocked i think

Hi.
I'm guessing this is a UAE outfit? If so then I think skype is blocked isn't it? VPN services is the only way around this for my mates living in Dubai but I can't see a way around it for an iphone. Out of curiosity, what are the iphone contracts like out there?

Any idea when the Iphone5 will come out? That should fix the problems of the 4 right? Should I get that or wait for the 6?

Jet II - I stand corrected then, got my info from one of the Etisalat branches when I was enquiring about their deal and the phone they were offering. They said Du was the same.

easybusdriver - Skype - no, believe it or not, you can download Skype from the UAE iTunes store as a free App. And it actually works with no hassle at all
