How bad is it really for a single guy in Doha?
I can't seem to get a straight answer on this. I've talked to some pilots at Qatar and they say they are happy, it's really a place to work and save money more than anything else. Then I come and read the stuff here and it's like Doha is a living hell for a single guy.
I did speak to one guy though who said he loves it! He is not in the aviation industry. He has been living in Doha for about 4 years. 2 years as a single guy and now he is married. He told me when he was single that him and his roomate used to have a good time, go out to the clubs in the hotels, bring girls to their appartment and party like a normal single guy does. Is that a rarity?
Plus is it reasonable to live on $3000 a month and save the rest that you make? I mean if you have housing and bills paid for. What is there to spend on? food, liquor, phone, internet, gas. is $3000 not enough?

Doha is for camel riders or family wimps. lets say you hook up with a hostie, with all thier rules, home by 330am, and 12hours before pickup at thier flats with no visitors, you cant drop them off or pick them up after a flight.
You would never see her. Oiutside of QR, the onlyway to pickup is if you speak arabic.

I follow the Qr thread for some time and i must say this is a good question of jetzdvr. I can imagine if you are married and you bring your family with, it is much easier for you. You come home and you have someone to chat with.
Are there no single guys here in doha working for QR who can share experience about their way of life over there?

You date a wrong one WOOOPS WOOOPS PULL UP !
If you get married it might create a lot of problems for you .
You need so called" clereance from a CEO " and fe of Captain's and C Crew got it it was ok if you do it without anyone know it . PROBLEM is there .
Yes some of people would say only Cabin crew need it but as a lot of other non written rules we all know what will happen if both do not have clereance .
There is a guy on 9 floor which will decide for you will you get married or not . ha ha what an great rule

we're not looking for getting married or anything like that. We are just asking about the life in doha as a single. Is there a social life possible? Or are they alone sitting in their appartment?
Just more info about that.

Dude your looking for the answer you want to hear, but thats not the reality, Doha is hell, if you go to a club your comp[eting with lots of arabs who have no pride, theirs 800 guys and 20women to a club. Join QR and realize what the truth about 10 days after your arrival. When i joined i was like you didnt want to see the reality till I joined, then I realized joining was the biggest mistake of my life.
I prefer you suffer just like me so come and join, enjoy the 3 year bond

I've applied to Qatar, and I would come if offered the 777 or A330. But I don't want to leave the United States to fly an A320 at QR, when I could potentially line up an interview at JetBlue and fly the same equipment here. But in the US, no one in their 20s is on the 777s or A330s. Getting on that equipment can also open up more options for later, beyond QR if one chooses.
Another bad thing I've heard about QR is the "bait n switch" trick. They offer you a 777 class, for example, and you leave your airline to come to Doha. (The bait) And once you get there and everything is too late to change or go back, they switch you to an A320 class. (The switch)

Really...well in that case you should stay in US if you dont want to queue...and let the senior guys here working hard on 320 GO FIRST to 330 or 777....THEY deserve it!!

I am single. I am enjoying myself and have been here a year. Maybe girls don't like whingers and people that see life as a glass half empty like some on this thread. If the picture painted by some is so bad, why would I want to depress myself even further by spending time in the company of said persons. More negative comments on my post to follow I guess...
To the negatives.....You just may have to accept that some guys here are trying to make the best of it and can and do have fun! Sorry to piss on your fire

hey loc,
More power to ya, and I absolutely agree that you people at QR should get fleet transfers. I was just stating from the standpoint that why leave for an opportunity that is already available here (like JetBlue A320). But a place like Emirates (all widebodies) offers a chance that you can't find in the US anymore. Not unless you have decades of seniority at a legacy...

Yes this is true, just recently QR had approx 40 candidates in Doha waiting for their training slot on the B777. suddenly and without warning a message from the top put a stop to it all, and now ALL have been switched to A320 and a few going to A330 fleets.
Thats just the chance you take. In a decade here my contract has changed more times than i can count. I've been able to deal with it (compromise). One day they will hit a nerve and then i'll leave like so many before me.
Thats just the way it is here.

motley, leave to what? If I leave my current job in the US, it will be next to impossible to find something else again. Staying current is important, as many won't look at you if you aren't current.
