I don't think Emirates were the only ones. CX said they wouldn't buy 300er's until they could do HKG JFK HKG with full payload. Offers of Las Vegas were laughed at

777's have been "doing" the pole for years. Why four engines?

surely the A380 with it's 4 engines is the aircraft for crossing the pole to the West Coast
380 doesn't have the range (yet)

Try using the cargo hold Fire Suppression duration as well as the number of engines when forming your opinion
