Upgrade in Emirates

I have read Emirates will be recruiting 700 new pilots in next 18 months. Assuming one joins this years with over 6000 hrs realistically how long will the wait be before upgrade?

I have heard in next 2-3 years lots of guys will retire and go for jobs in China & Vietnam, helping to speed things up for those aspiring for a Captain's seat.

So what do you think? Will it take between 3-5 years or more?
Will EK offer the fast track command route to guys joining this year?

3-5 years? Stop dreaming pls.
By the end of year 5, if they need captains, they would just hire DEC and you have to wait for another 5 years.

Obi Wan,

Lesson 1: Don't count on any timeline for upgrade. Whatever that is said or given WILL change. That I can guarantee you. It may change for the better or for the worse, who knows. There is no correct answer to your question.

Lesson 2: Fast track upgrades don't mean anything when EK has FOs eligible for upgrade above your staff number and there are loads.

Lesson 3: DEC's are always cheaper for EK to hire in a hurry than to plan for an upgrade from within the company. Since the company has demonstrated that it cannot plan its staffing levels within any form of efficiency, you can bet EK will always be either hiring or firing in a hurry. DECs are here to stay.

Good luck and yes some of the ranting threads here about EK are true.

Emirates has 2300 pilots.
Approx 2/3 on the B777 ----- 1500
Approx 1/3 on the AB fleet -- 800

Since 1 may 2010 50 pilots ave joined our ranks.

Doing the math it would be hard to see a 3-5 year upgrade for a new joiner today.

No one can predict if guys will be leaving the next 2-3 years or where to.

This is the land of moving goal posts and big surprises, so make your bets gentlemen, the wheel is spinning!

A bit of a gamble then...

So it is a bit of a gamble then?
On average what is an FO taking home per month?
Can you get your salary increased as an FO by becoming an SFI or CRM Instructor? If so how much more per month?

Obi,
My best advise, take it as it comes and pls dont expect anything out of EK.
Or you will be sorry and disappointed.

The last two FOs I have flown with came to EK with previous command experience, and were promised accelerated command.

Three years later, they are both still in the RHS.

Both are now looking at going back to either their previous employer, or to an employer that will give them an immediate command.

Says a lot about the promises you'll no doubt get from EK recruiting.

In this industry, once you give up your command, after a certain period you may as well not have had one.

Thanks Kamelchaser

Kamechaser, I guess that sums it all up. I must say though that the Emirates Provident Fund looks attractive. Even if it would take 7 years to command and you stay 10 you may end up being better off than flying 10 years as a Captain somewhere else...

My provident fund is worth about 17,000USD per year after 10 years.

Not much to write home about.

Obi.

You seem desperate. You WANT to believe. You are perfect. You are just what they are looking for. Come on down.

upgrade time

EKs expansion plans will stop within the next 5 years, then the new AC are replacements. So you better hope you get a upgraded before 2015 or ur out O luck.

I think , in the case of Obi , it is more like 'Come on UP' than 'Down' !!

Just wondering what information you are basing that on?

I thought the target was mesured growth towards 350 aircraft.

Wiz, I think he saw it written on a piece of paper having just wiped his bottom with it!

'tis of course utter crap! During the 2007 profit share announcement, Sheik A stated that the end goal (20 year plan) was to have something in the region of 700-750 aircraft.

Now that may also be utter crap (ie the 'My willy's bigger than yours' bravado), but I'm more inclined to listen to him than a guy from the States who has more than likely failed the pilot selection!!

Listen out in 6 weeks time (Farnborough Airshow), I think there will be some interesting developments............

330 phase out starts in in 2011, all 340 gone by 2014. Eleven 777 leave between 2012 and 2016. So approximately 50 planes over the next 6 years. Of course we will be getting more but we have never been phasing out so many. Now this is a rumor network and EK is infamous for planning to get rid of planes then keeping them around a lot longer ( A310 ). Just don't want to be in the right seat when it happens.

With a rough calculation between phase out and phase in we will have 200 total by 2020. That if we get all 53 380s and 70 350s plus 5 748s

the 748's were to come in 2010 ,might not happen, might go to someone else who would operate them for skycargo. Or more 777F's. As said before stand by for 1 CAP 3 FO ULR and not as amany upgrades as you think.

NO one was ever promised an Accelerated upgrade, just ask anyone on the recruitment team
