Question Middle East..where to go to get a real feel for the living

I'm interested to know why people would change their location from europe to the middle east.

I have a job, flying A320 in europe for a low-cost and was just wondering if it would be worth it to give that up and move to the middle east to join the BIG players overthere..

Just to get a "feel" I'm going to Dubai and Abu Dhabi (Formula One) this coming weekend. Besides the obvious "luxury" every one goes to see...where/what should I do/go to to get a feel for living in the "sandpit" as it is referered to back home.

The only reason to come here is if you have been laid off, otherwise stay where you are.
This is a mirage of wealth and luxury, but behind the curtain, it's a desert desperate to look like a developped country but fails big time to do so. Selfish, uneducated, dangerous, polluted, slaverish, racist, superficial and unfair.
Money and easy told lies lure people to come here in the sandpit. Once you come you realised how bad your move was, but only then, and it's too late.
If you come around here for a while, you'll see what evil looks like from close, just scratch the fake golden paint.....

a320,

I have to agree with CB. These guys only pretend to play the BIG boys, in reality they are far from it. Stay where you are, quality of life is worth a certain monetary value, one that this place can not come close to matching.

Not all that glitters is gold.

Enjoy the F1

If there was A-320 job available in.. Oman, i would tell you to go there...but there isn't...
But he..that's because for me quality of live doesn't mean driving the latest Mercedes&BMW%Hummer, or buying the latest Rolex or changing of mobile every 6 month...but rather live in a peaceful place with beautiful nature and being surrounded by friendly&civilised and courteous people....at least on this field i think Oman is one step ahead,..if not 2 step ahead..

Mate,

Check my posts from 5-6 years ago. You will see that I was very happy with my decision to come over.

Am I still happy about my decision today? Sure, but it comes with a warning!

I sit in the Left Hand seat, I look out on the drive at my Porsche, I look at a picture of my 30' Motor Cruiser in the marina, think about the income I'm earning from the rent in my flat at Dubai Marina (for which I payed cash), my wife and kids are happy and its sunny! However, I managed all this by selling a property here 'at the right time' and turned a good profit (more luck than judgement).

You WILL NOT achieve this lifestyle for well over a decade (maybe 2) if you join now as an F/O, and that's assuming you last a decade without killing yourself (or getting fired)!

The point being, I can cope with and even enjoy the lifestyle here because I have all the trappings. You will not!

Would I join today as an F/O knowing what I now know? NO F&%#%g way brother! And I'm one of the positive ones! (although not as positive as I once was).

If you are happy where you are, you make enough cash to get by with a decent lifestyle, and you enjoy your job and have a happy family, then stay put!

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT come here just because we fly 'BIG' aircraft. trust me its not that exciting....... I had more fun flying turbo-props around 15 years ago!

Be wise my friend!

Spot on.
No post will be closer to the truth than this one. Thanks Oblaaspop.
We fly widebody aircrafts, they are fantastic piece of equipment, to nice destinations most of the time, but it's not all.
And we do, as every airline have dark areas, indian sectors at night, a few low standard layover hotels, unstable rostering sometimes, unfair management as well sometimes, but EY by itself is not yet a bad place to work in.
AUH though is now.

Thank all of you for the quick and good replies.

Bottom line, I guess... quality of life is way better back in Europe. So for now I will just come over this weekend enjoy the F1, do some looking around the "luxury" and probably... most likely I'll be glad that I came... saw.. and can go "home".

I will just wait until my number comes up... get upgraded... and fly the "small" A320 (which is big enought for me).

Once again: Thanks for the replies!

Its amazing how a well educated individual makes up his mind on a career move based on an anonymous rumor network.......

Most people talk crap on this PPRUNE.... n get away with discouraging genuine folks...

My advice to all..... do not base your opinion on these posts please......... Judge what you gotta do based on Facts.... Talk to Folks u know in the Airline(friends) n then Decide..

Peace n all the Best...

cruisinfobrewsin, you just be new in the area and home for you must be a USD currency country or one or one pegged to it to start with.
Do you think everyone is going to get the chance to meet and be assisted by folks in the Airline(friends)? At least Oblaaspop gave his opinion which doesn't differ much from my own and that of the vast majority of the guys around here.

Makin the move

I gotta agree with Loc22550, if you had a shot to move to Oman then it would be worth looking at more closely, it's a nice place to be, low population density and relaxed. The folks down there are far more chilled out notwithstanding the driving but at least they make an effort.

Some of the best beaches in the Gulf region too.

Hustle on

Yeah, a few people spoke to Oblaaspop before joining. Until a few weeks ago he was one of EKs keenest supporters. See above for his thoughts now. He's aligned himself with the protesters.

But where does that leave the middle aged guy who gave up a European jet command 18 months ago to join EK as an F/O because his buddy Ob... said he should. If he'd taken note of PPRuNe ME instead of Ob... he wouldn't be the bemused and confused character who is now stuck in the right seat at EK for 6, 8, 10 maybe 12 years (who knows). Unless he leaves, which he will be doing as soon as he can.

True story.

Hey mont,

If 'he' is who I think 'he' is, then its about time he stopped blaming other people for the crap decisions HE made in HIS life.

As my primary school teacher once said, "If johnny told you to put your head in a gas oven would you do it?"

Is he a middle aged man or a 12 year old child??

Grow up for christ's sake!

However my point remains, if I was asked a year or more ago, then I would have said "yeah come along", if you were to ask me today (since the decline in our T's & C's and the scuppering of the F/O's career progression), then I would say stay away. Simple for anyone with an I.Q. greater than say... 3

Sadly when I was asked 2 years ago by the above, none of us could have foreseen what the gits in management would do to a decent airline and place to work, least of all me. Maybe I should have buffed my crystal balls a bit better? But then, he did say that he wanted to fly big shiny aircraft, long haul, and work for EK 'cause he was fed up of flying 1 hour sectors in little aircraft.............. I guess that's my fault as well?
