Oh boy, the summer madness continues. Watch yourselves when in Sharjah! From Gulfnews

Sharjah police enforce old law against men wearing accessories

By Bassma Al Jandaly, Staff Reporter
Published: July 21, 2009, 22:45

Sharjah: Thirteen-year-old Mohammad was with a group of friends in Al Qasba area when he was reportedly approached by a police officer and taken to the police headquarters. His silver necklace had to go.

Another resident, Jeril Jaison Varghese, says he was in front of the Multiplex in Mega Mall to watch a movie when a CID officer asked him for his identification.

"I was taken to the Sharjah Police office inside the mall by a security guy from the mall. My silver bracelet was confiscated by the CID," he said.

When Varghese asked why his bracelet was being taken away, he says, police said men are not allowed to wear bracelets or any fashion accessories in Sharjah malls even if it is silver and not gold.

"When did this rule come into being? There was no public notification and no posters in the mall notifying people of this rule," Varghese said. Another resident said on Saturday CID confiscated his friend's silver bracelet while they were in a mall.

"Is there a rule in Sharjah that authorises the CID to confiscate fashion accessories other than gold from residents and their children from malls?" asked Aji Alexander.

A Mexican mother who recently shifted to the UAE and is now living in Sharjah said her 14-year-old son was scared when he was stopped by police who shouted at him for wearing diamond earrings.

"Police were rude... We have no clue that such things are not allowed here," the mother said. "I am not allowing my son to go to Al Qasba again. My son is a very decent and polite boy," she said.

"If people are not offending the laws of the country and are not acting like women by wearing such accessories so why are police taking such action?" she asked.

Mohammad from Sudan said his 18-year old nephew who came from Abu Dhabi to visit his grandmother in Sharjah was taken last week to the headquarters for wearing a silver necklace.

"The boy was afraid. He was standing in front of his grandmother's house when police took him to the CID. After three hours he contacted us," said Mohammad. Residents said Sharjah authorities should inform people who wish to come here that men must not wear fashion accessories.

"Tourist companies should inform the public. Information booklets should be handed to people at the country's entry points. They should advertise that in all malls and entertainment areas such as Al Qasba which we believe are safe places for our children to spend time," said a resident.

"We are aware of the decency law in Sharjah, but wearing silver bracelets, necklaces, or even earrings in a decent way is not against the law," said a resident.

A senior CID official told Gulf News that police are implementing an eight-year-old decency law.

"Men are not allowed to wear such accessories. Everybody is aware of that," he said. "We are informing people through the media and people should be aware of that," he said.

Islam forbids men from wearing gold and silk.

So, if your wedding band happens to be a little more snug than when it was first placed on your finger 20 years ago...then what? Are you relieved of the offending finger? A wedding band is usually gold and I guess illegal for a man to wear. COME ON Sharjah! Where is the tolerance that the UAE preaches!

I'm sorry but am I the only one that see's the irony in all this...
no gold,no bling...

does that include the standard Arab issue Gold Rolex, or is there a quality/cost perception clause to this "law"... if it wasn't so serious you'd have to laugh!

H1N1 cases put pressure on hospitals in UAE
By Abdullah Rasheed and Dina El Shammaa, Abu Dhabi Editor, and Staff Reporter
Published: July 21, 2009, 22:45

Abu Dhabi: Hospitals in the UAE do not have enough manpower to handle the H1N1 cases streaming in, an official warned on Wednesday, as the World Health Organisation (WHO) said countries could consider closing schools to curb its spread.

The official, from the National Committee for Combating Swine Flu, said hospitals have been receiving on average two cases daily for the past two months.

The UAE announced urgent steps on Tuesday to tackle the virus, including setting up thermal scanners at malls and giving companies the right to cancel residence visas of employees who contract it abroad. Companies are also being advised to grant two weeks' leave to employees who return to the UAE and show symptoms.

There are currently 110 H1N1 cases in the country, of which 30 originated here.

British researchers writing in the journal Lancet said governments must draft plans for when and how to close schools if the pandemic worsens.

"School closure is one of the measures that could be considered by countries," WHO spokeswoman Alphaluck Bhatiasevi said.
110 out of 5 000 000!!!!!!!!
What is with the WHO and it's fear mongering.

Rear entry

It's funny, men behaving as women is frowned upon so some teenager gets in trouble for a bit of bling, yet, it's completely acceptable for 2 Arab men to go butthole surfing together in the desert!

Why do you think they wear thobes!

SHJ is a 5h1t-hole anyway, best seen through the rear view mirror, still, one must pass close by on the way to the Barracuda

Hustle On

Just a brief defence of Sharjah.

Unlike Dubai Sharjah has been more conservative. They haven't borrowed huge amounts to build unrealistic projects like in Dubai and are not suffering to the same extent the downturn that Dubai is now experiencing.

It has been more conservative when it comes to allowing Dubai style drinking establisments and the vices that have accompanied some of them.

It has been more conservative than Dubai in trying to attract a different type of tourist, with an excellent set of museums and attractions.

The Sheik though, still has the for sight to allow an expatriate sports club to exist, catering for the differing requirements of the non muslim residents.

Property rentals are still far lower than in Dubai.

In conclusion Sharjah's conservative values makes for a great place for ex pat families to live.

neilb767 - Al Hamra is an MMI outlet, cheap and no tax and well stocked. At the end of Emirates Rd going into RAK take the left turn towards UAQ and it's 10 minutes on the right hand side. Better I think than the Barracuda further up the road..

As one might know, the Sheikh is married to some Saudi princess (of which, like princes, there are hundreds, thanks to the "spread it around" fornication habits of the Saudi rulers). He has, in fact, tried to introduce Saudi-inspired politics thanks to these familiy ties.
