Just a brief defence of Sharjah.
Unlike Dubai Sharjah has been more conservative. They haven't borrowed huge amounts to build unrealistic projects like in Dubai and are not suffering to the same extent the downturn that Dubai is now experiencing.
It has been more conservative when it comes to allowing Dubai style drinking establisments and the vices that have accompanied some of them.
It has been more conservative than Dubai in trying to attract a different type of tourist, with an excellent set of museums and attractions.
The Sheik though, still has the for sight to allow an expatriate sports club to exist, catering for the differing requirements of the non muslim residents.
Property rentals are still far lower than in Dubai.
In conclusion Sharjah's conservative values makes for a great place for ex pat families to live.
