Gulf Air pioneers bio-fuel project
MANAMA: Gulf Air has joined a global partnership that aims to make eco-friendly aviation bio-fuel a reality within five years.
It is the only Middle East airline taking part in the project, which includes Boeing, refining technology developer, Honeywell UOP, and eight other leading international airlines.
The group has announced two initial research projects, one involving producing fuel from a poisonous shrub called jatropha curcas and the other involving algae.
"The project will provide cheaper fuel with a considerably lower carbon footprint than traditional aviation fuel," Gulf Air chief executive officer Beyond Naff said yesterday.
