UAE Internet proxy - How does it affect voip/emule/skype?

As this is a UAE specific question I am asking it here in this forum rather than the generic computer forum.

I was wanting to know some specifics on how the UAE proxy server impacts on programs like skype,emule/edonkey and on VOIP applications which use specific TCP PORTS to access the internet. Is the proxy server simply blocking certain http: web links or are they actually firewalling the internet and blocking all ports except the generic web and email ports?

Any VPN solutions that work?

Is there a document explaining the technical aspects of how the proxy server impacts on internet access or perhaps some documented information compiled by an IT savvy person?

Would appreciate any info or PMs.

UAE proxy

This has been discussed at length, primarily amongst EK employees on PPRuNe. There are ofcourse several work arounds which you'll find by doing some google based searches.

I've heard blockages also differ from one ISP to the next, as well as geographic location. Apparently the censorship doesnt apply to dubai's 'free zones' ??
