Hotels in Dubai
I am an Ozzie pilot CPL/MEIR and instructor going to England for a short holiday end of March. Will be in Dubai for a couple of days to break the journey up. Can anyone recommend any good hotels, close to airport/affordable???
Any suggestions on things to do and costs would be of great appreciation.

Best hotels are on the beach many miles away and hugely expensive, but the Riviera Hotel on the creek, 10 mins from airport yet also right in the city centre, is great, ask for creek-view, and when I stayed there I was able to negotiate a much lower rate than advertised on their website (rivierahotel-dubai.com).
Horce races are on Thursday evenings and camel racing v early on Friday mornings! Fish and meat market beside the Hyatt is also fun.

Try the Airport Hotel.
They have a pick up shuttle and will give you a good airline rate. (Even better if you are flying on Emirates as they have a package deal)
There's 2 wings to the Hotel, one is 5 star the other I would rate 3.5, and good enough.
Also walking distance to the Airport.
Things to do.........check out the Gold at night!

Try one of these:
<a href="http://www.asiatravel.com/uae/uae.html" target="_blank">http://www.asiatravel.com/uae/uae.html</a>
<a href="http://www.asiatraveltips.com/HotelsinDubaiM.htm" target="_blank">http://www.asiatraveltips.com/HotelsinDubaiM.htm</a>
<a href="http://seastour.com/dubai.htm" target="_blank">http://seastour.com/dubai.htm</a>
<a href="http://www.easyholidays.net/dubai/dxbhtl.htm" target="_blank">http://www.easyholidays.net/dubai/dxbhtl.htm</a>
I have also booked hotels from this site, both in Dubai, and the USA:
<a href="http://www.dubai-holidays4less.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.dubai-holidays4less.co.uk/</a>
Please note that, during the Dubai Shopping Festival March 1-31, 2002 and the World Cup Horse Race - 23 March, 2002, hotel rooms will be scarce, and discounts almost impossible to find!
As previously stated, most of the "beach" hotels are at least 30 mins drive from the centre of Dubai. The exception is the Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa, which is just opposite the Jumeirah Mosque(nice building) and about 10-15 minutes from Dubai centre. I stayed there Summer 2000, and have no complaints!

Deepee, depends on what you consider as the city centre - Al Nasser Square? Try doing it at "rush hour", either through the Shindagah Tunnel or Maktoum Bridge! If you did it quicker, must have been an al-Qaeda taxi driver!
Jumeirah Beach Hotel is generally considered to be about twenty-five kilometres from Dubai Intl. Airport, and 20 kilometres from Gold Souk. Most of the other hotels are further out. Jebel Ali Hotel would be 45 minutes drive!
