Mistaken Identity
I just found this horrifying story of an ex-Emirates staff.. not sure if she was cabin crew or working for another department though. The story is quite long so I'm just going to post the link. It's nothing negative about the airline itself, but rather how the Dubai government handled a traveller (the ex-Emirates girl)...

try this:
click here damn, link still not working: google "dubai courts mistaken identity"
Pretty sombre reading, but about on par with the outstanding capabilities of DXB officialdom. She did well to get out in under 12 hrs. (I lost count of how many times she burst into tears, I hope she kept rehydrated during that time)
Most common tactic is to try and coerce a confession out of you, as that is easier than doing real police work - so don't admit to anything, even if you think it might mitigate your circumstances.
Never sign ANYTHING, especially if you don't read Arabic. Don't trust what the smiling guy in the uniform tells you, as he explains that if you sign it, all will be ok.

Given that you're hoping to work in the ME ashlea, I'm surprised that you're surprised. I've said it before and will say it again - You're not popping over to a friends house on a sleepover - you're considering living and working in the ME: A little research would normally be appropriate?

I just hadn't heard of anything like that before really, so yeah, it bewildered (not shocked) me. I've been living overseas and alone since I was 16, so give me a little credit please (granted it's only been within Asia-Pacific, but nonetheless).. I wanted opinions
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not..?
And why the star-blockages on the urls? What is uncalled for about news-related blog content that is accessible to the wider public anyway?

Were those pilots jailed for things which are illegal under UAE law (but perhaps legal elsewhere), or were they just chucked in the slammer? I would understand the former (and have no pity), but if its the latter I would have serious concerns...

There is/was no blocking of the URL. The correct link is :
http://www.dubaicrime.com/2008/01/mi...-identity.html
The problem was originally with the User Finger/Brain/Keyboard interface: Subsequently the easier option than thinking was, as usual, to blame PPRuNe.

Having been wrongly locked up myself in the UAE, I can only sympathise with the story and the victim. Police force seems to recruit from a pool of mainly illiterate imbeciles.
The bottom line is that the Emiratis have more money than brains, and it ain't gonna change!

How do I get me one of those cool kitty cat chas'n the bird thing at the bottom of my posts
On a more serious note...ugh hmm...a good mate was sent to a discrete but not very hospitable desert location (not the the Al Maha resort for the record!) for at least 8 days after a mis-communication between the GCC States on a 'loan' issue'. The Omani bank had issued a dated and inaccurate request to the adjacent states to arrest on arrival due to outstanding financial commitments.
The long and the short of it another MEM (Middle East Moment) that cost him dearly (9 KG in fact). They let him out, his new sponsor totally miffed by this basically didn't give him much chance to explain and the whole thing is what we describe in the industry as a cluster f*ook!
Apologies from the appropriate authorites, pfffft I don't think so!
Gotta love this place...
